Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Photographs and drawings (illustrator). 1st Edition. Here is Edith Head's remarkable story - the definitive book by and about the woman whose name is synonymous with Hollywood costume design. Through six decades of film fashion, Edith Head dressed most of the great stars - Dietrich, Lombard, Swanson, the Hepburns (Audrey and Kate), Hope and Crosby, Grace Kelly and Elvis Presley, to name a few - and won an unprecedented eight Oscars for her spectacular creations. As Bette Davis says in her Foreword, "You'll read her story the way she would have told itâ"and, indeed, did tell it." In the 1920s, bored with teaching art to schoolkids, Edith bluffed her way into a job in the Paramount wardrobe department. Before long, her spunk and talent had landed her her first screen credit, for She Done Him Wrong with Mae West. Soon she'd risen to the position of Chief Costume Designer, and supervised virtually every Paramount film until the late 1960s. Highlights of these years included her "Latin look" for Barbara Stanwyck in The Lady Eve, which created a fashion sensation; her trend-setting sarong for Dorothy Lamour in The Jungle Princess; her peacock train for Hedy Lamarr in Samson and Delilah, one of the most famous costumes in Hollywood history (each of the thousands of feathers were gathered from the grounds of Cecil B. DeMille's ranch and pasted on by hand); and her famous cocktail dress for Bette Davis in All About Eve, which became, through a lucky accident, the memorable version known to moviegoers. Later Head worked at Universal, where she won her last Oscar for dressing Robert Bedford and Paul Newman in The Sting. Edith Head's Hollywood traces an incredible career that spanned the history of films - from the silent era to Steve Martin's Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, her last picture. All the behind-the-scene stories, a feast of great movie lore, dozens of elegant costume sketches and dreamy photographsâ"it adds up to a life, as Davis puts it, that was "all about glamourâ"sixty-odd years of it." EDITH HEAD worked on this autobiography until the time of her death in 1981. The story was completed by PADDY CALISTRO, former journalist for the Los Angeles Times. Ms. Calistro lives in Santa Monica with her husband Scott and her son David. Edith Head's color sketches courtesy of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. All orders shipped protected in a box. Book.
