Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. 297 pages (complete). This is Hassel's first novel. It was published in Denmark and then Britain before it was revealed in 1963 that he had actively worked for the Germans during the war with the secret intelligence unit that actively supported the Danish 'Gestapo'. Consequently he found Barcelona more alluring than Copenhagen and moved there in 1964. His novels have recently had a resurgence of interest. This is a first English edition of perhaps his most popular novel (although more 'roman' than 'a clef' as had been claimed). The dustjacket is much worn, torn and marked. It is nonetheless sure and intact. The board covers have shelf dust marks. They are healthy. The papertrims have some light marking. The pages are a little marked, but are otherwise clean, clear, comfortable, certain and thrilling. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). First edition. A moving translation of Sven Hassel's novel following a soldier who is forced to fight for Germany during the Second World War. This is the first UK edition of the work, being a translation of the novel into English by Maurice Michael. The work was first published in Danish in 1953. This work is in original publisher's cloth binding, in the original clipped dust wrapper. Sven Hassel was the pseudonym of Danish author Børge Willy Redsted Pedersen, who was most known for his novels about German soldiers in World War Two. This is evident in The Legion of the Damned, which tells the story of a young Danish-Austrian soldier being forced to fight for the Nazis after being sent to a concentration camp for trying to flee the country. Hassle describes the horrific experiences of the soldiers, but also conveys their humour remaining throughout. With a moving dedication to fifteen comrades who 'fell for a cause which was not their own', including five women. With publisher's advertisements to the rear and a Vanity Fair booksellers label to the front paste down. In original publisher's cloth binding with the price-clipped dust wrapper. Externally, in lovely condition, with very minor shelf wear. Booksellers label to front paste down. Dust wrapper in excellent condition, with minor shelf wear to the extremities and the odd mark. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the occasional handling mark. Very Good Indeed. book.
