Hardcover. Condition: Very good plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good plus. 1st Edition. [288pp, 9 plate leaves, top edge mauve]: xviii, 270 (last three leaves blank); yellow linen stamped mauve, jacket ($2.50 on flap); 211 x 148 x 36 mm. A tight clean copy of Canadian journalist Robinson MacLean's inside account of Mussolini's brutal 1935 invasion of Abyssinia (including chemical warfare), which ultimately drove Emperor Haile Selassie into exile (TIME magazine naming him Man of the Year, the first black man on the cover) & set the stage for WW2. Known as John Hoy ('His Majesty') by his subjects, Haile Selassie (meaning 'Power of the Trinity') was crowned 'King of Kings, Elect of God, & Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah' (1930), remaining Emperor of Ethiopia until just before his death (1975). In part through prophecies of Marcus Garvey (& the ministry of Archibald Dunkley, Joseph Hibbert, Leonard Howell & Robert Hinds), he was adopted as the New Messiah, on whom a new religion was founded in 1930: Rastafaria ('Ras Tafari' signifying that their 'head' was Tafari Makonnen Woldemikael, his birth name). A faith whose sacrament is weed (ganga) & sacred music includes reggae, ska & burru. A religion which has engendered revolutionary advancements in language (lyaric, hip hop) & spiritual discipline, contributing immeasurably to the spirit of black autonomy worldwide; one of the more seminal, yet least recognized, cultural & ethical movements of the 20th century. Discolouration to boards from light offset; production crease along bottom edge of first gathering. Jacket missing small pieces at terminals of joints & upper flap, with light water stain at bottom edge rear. A quite presentable copy of this intimate sketch of one of the earliest modern African independence leaders.

5" x 3½", together with an oval photo taken from a magazine, no place, Haile Selassie is a defining figure in modern Ethiopian history, and the key figure of Rastafari, a religious movement in Jamaica which emerged shortly after he became emperor in the 1930s. He attempted to modernize the country through a series of political and social reforms, including the introduction of Ethiopia's constitution of 1931, its first written constitution, and the abolition of slavery. He led the failed efforts to defend Ethiopia during the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and spent the period of Italian occupation in exile in England. In 1941, he returned to lead Ethiopia, after the British Empire defeated the Italian occupiers in the East African campaign.
"With all Good Wishes for Christmas. from His Majesty the Emperor of Ethiopia", opposite a coloured photo of "Lake Wonchi - Ethiopia", 9" x 7" in folded white card with his crest in gold on the front, no place, 1964- Haile Selassie is a defining figure in modern Ethiopian history, and the key figure of Rastafari, a religious movement in Jamaica which emerged shortly after he became emperor in the 1930s. Selassie, Haile (illustrator). Anonymous. WANTED POUR GENOCIDE. Screenprinted poster, c. 1972-74. 25 3/8 x 19 1/4 inches. Revolutionary poster accusing the Emperor of genocide in the deaths of 100,000 as a result of the famine in Northeastern Ethiopia in 1972-74. The famine helped to destabilize Haile Selassie's regime, which was overthrown by revolution in 1974. The full message, in mixed English and French, reads: "Wanted/ Pour Genocide/ Ethiopie:/ 100,000 morts de Faim; 5 millions en Peril/ Haile Sealssie Refoule Toute Aide Internationale!" Printed on fragile paper, in black and purple, with two holes in or near the matrix of the image, some small paper losses at the edges of the sheet, and uneven printing of some of the lettering. Despite it flaws this is a powerful image, and a document of the twilight days of the reign of one of the most extraordinary figures of the twentienth century, a reign which has been tragically followed by decades of war and instability.

Original large-format color print in presentation mat with title card affixed to mat below image. View size 49cm x 38cm (ca 19" x 15"); overall dimensions 60cm x 51cm. Title card inscribed in black ink: "For Bob MacNeal, a fellow photographer, with best wishes / Arnold Newman," undated. Mat lightly soiled, with a few small chips and abrasions to extremities; image clean and unfaded, Near Fine. ca NOTE: the mat appears permanently fixed to the photograph, as presented by the photographer; we have not attempted to examine the print outside the mat. Impressive large-format portrait by Newman, here inscribed to one "Bob MacNeal," identified as a "fellow photographer," though we can find no photographers of the period who used this spelling. Possibly a misspelling of Bob MacNeil (still active), the prominent Canadian fashion photographer; possibly a misspelling of Bob McNeill (d.2007), the prominent African-American documentary photographer; or possibly the correct spelling of an acquaintance of no notable prominence at all. Undated, but ca. early 1970s, a superlative image of the Ethiopian Emperor, boldly inscribed and signed by Newman below image.

Photographie: 240 : 300 mm. Rahmung: 380 : 320 mm. Minimale Nadeleinstiche in der Mitte der Photographie. Portraitphotographie in Schwarzweiß mit Unterschrift, gerahmt. Das Brustbild zeigt Haile Selassi I. in Paradeuniform geschmückt mit Orden. Photographie Tony Boyadjian, Court Photographer.
