Catalan pianist and composer Enrique Granados "appeared frequently in recitals, concerto performances and chamber music alongside such prominent figures as Thibaud, Saint-Saëns and Casals, a personal friend, for whom he composed several pieces. He became well known for his impromptu improvisations. Granados's musical language is rooted in mainstream European traditions, frequently blended with elements derived from traditional Spanish (and less often Catalan) folk music. [His] foremost strength was undoubtedly his melodic gift, which can be best appreciated in his songs and piano works. Granados made a significant contribution to the development of a national Spanish school and, though he is often considered more conservative than Albéniz or Falla, the degree to which native elements inform his music should not be underestimated. Johnson had great success as a lyricist early in the century but found that tastes had changed when he attempted a return to song-writing in 1914. He translated the libretto for this opera which the Metropolitan Opera performed in 1916. Granados, the Spanish Romantic composer of the piano pieces from which this opera was adapted, attended the premiere but drowned in the English channel upon his return to Europe when a German submarine torpedoed the boat on which Granados was travelling. Schirmer also published the libretto separately in 1915 as a smaller-format 42-page pamphlet in their series of opera-librettos. We don't know which version has priority; both are quite uncommon in commerce. Apparent 1st ed. with Johnson translation [no later printing information].
