Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: Two volumes, complete as published. 8vo, 346 & 306 pgs, illustrations, folding map, maps, portraits. Red cloth, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Limited to 1210 sets. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Very clean and attractive set. Front of vol. 1 has two spots, else clean. Both volumes tight in bindings. Interiors have inked name/date of former owner, "William A. Rockefeller / 1935", on front endpapers of each volume, else very clean. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: One of the great and early Arthur H Clark Company publications and a cornerstone set for a Western Americana collection. Brunet/Clark #134: "The classic Clark title recounts the federal government's attempt to open a road north from the Oregon Trail through the Powder River Country, hunting grounds of the Sioux, in the late 1860's. Containing previously unpublished narratives, this work has served as a valuable reference tool for students of the northern Plains." While later reprinted in a single volume, this first edition is quite scarce, especially in this very attractive condition. The former owner, William Avery Rockeffer III, dated his acquisition in 1935. This set from his personal library, and despite the two light spots on the front cover of volume 1, this is a very clean and attractive set with little shelf wear or over-use.
