Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Softcover, first edition thus. Approximately 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches, 12 pp, illustrated with 2 photos of paintings and 1 of a bust. Hand colored and gilded intial letter. Very good. Moderate shelf wear, a bit wavy, foxing, most notably on first and last few leaves, paper clip mark from author's presentation card, but otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. One of a series of books bound and given as Christmas gifts each year, this one obviously reflecting the World War II shortages of many materials. Brief history of the discoveries of Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, and why the New World was named after the latter. Author was president of the New York Historical Society from 1939-1947 and an expert amateur bookbinder, whose works were exhibited there in 1998.
