Kopitzsch, Hamburgische Biografie III, 354 f. - Sehr seltene erste und einzige Ausgabe des wichtigen Quellenwerks zum Vormärz verfasst von dem Hamburger Lehrer G. F. Schumacher (1771-1852). - Die Göttinger Professoren W. E. A. Albrecht, F. C. Dahlmann, H. Ewald, G. G. Gervinus, J. u. W. Grimm und W. E. Weber protestierten 1837 gegen die Aufhebung der 1833 eingeführten liberalen Verfassung im Königreich Hannover durch Ernst August I. Die sieben Professoren wurden deshalb entlassen; drei von ihnen wurden darüber hinaus des Landes verwiesen. - "Als Ernst August schließlich am 1. November das Staatsgrundgesetz außer Kraft setzte, versuchte Dahlmann erneut, die gesamte Universität zur Opposition gegen diesen Staatsstreich zu bewegen, und verfasste eine Protestation. Es fanden sich jedoch nur sechs andere Professoren zur Unterschrift bereit: der Jurist Wilhelm Eduard Albrecht, der Theologe und Orientalist Georg Heinrich August Ewald, der Historiker Georg Gottfried Gervinus, die Germanisten Jakob und Wilhelm Grimm und der Physiker Wilhelm Weber. Ihre eigentliche Sprengkraft entwickelte diese Schrift in dem Moment ihrer Veröffentlichung vermutlich durch Gervinus hunderte von Studenten stellten innerhalb weniger Tage einige tausend Abschriften her und versandten sie in ganz Deutschland. Jetzt sah sich der König, um sein Gesicht als noch "junger" Landesherr zu wahren, zu hartem Durchgreifen genötigt: Am 4. Dezember wurden die sieben Professoren vor dem Universitätsgericht vernommen und bereits am 14. Dezember ihrer Ämter enthoben. Dahlmann, Gervinus und Jakob Grimm mussten wegen Verbreitung der Schrift außerhalb des Königreiches binnen drei Tagen Göttingen verlassen und wurden des Landes verwiesen. Den übrigen, so die Anweisung, sei nach ihrer Entlassung der Aufenthalt in Göttingen weiterhin gestattet" (U.
