Alessandro Gavazzi [1809-1889, some authorities say 1899] was an Italian preacher, patriot and reformer. An ordained priest in the Roman Catholic Church, Gavazzi was a champion of liberal ideas who left Italy in 1849 to join the Evangelical Church (1850) and organized Italian Protestants in London (1850-60). He served under Garibaldi as Chief Chaplain to the Roman Army of Independence (1860) and organized the Free Church of Italy (1870), as well as establishing a theological school in Rome (1875). [Webster's Biographical Dictionary] The present work was translated and revised by Jadam Julie de Marguerittes. D.B.I., vol.
