Octavo, original purple cloth over boards, blindstamped, gilt lettering, deckle edge, illustrated dust jacket, illustrated endpapers, black and white plate frontispiece, black and white illustrations and plates thoughout, signed and inscribed by editor at half-title, dated 1931. "Examination of the completely forgotten minor literature of the first half of the nineteenth century reveals the Victorian female as somewhat different from the ordinary conception of her. This anthology of selections from obscure but once popular books?novels, gift-books, model-letter-writers, poetry?presents her as she really was, in all her variety;" very scarce signed. Very Good, fading to cloth at edges, in Very Good dust jacket, small chips, fading to spine.
On stiff writing paper. 17.7 x 11.4 cm. 14 short lines in large handwriting, signed 'Clifton Joseph Furness' and by his mother 'Clara Evana Furnas' (the son had officially changed the spelling of his name in 1917). Soft crease and light brown stain at the unwritten reverse. 'To Jerome with memories - thou hast shared the "Hills of God" at Ravine Wood (.)'. Furness (1898-1946) was a pianist and musical teacher in New York City (a.o. teacher of Elliot Carter). Furness and Goldstein, a violinist, belonged to the small circle of musicians who performed the highly experimental works of Charles Ives in the 1920s. You may conclude from this letter that they also met on other occasions. Also, Furness was an authority on Walt Whitman. His papers are in the University at Buffalo. - A rare tangible sign of famous concerts of a century ago!.
