Signed by both authors on the title page. Some ink underlining, comments and other marks noted. Some page discoloration noted. Draws on recent advances in astronomy, physics, and cosmology to present a theory of how to understand the universe and the role of our own world, in an account that offers insight into the origins and evolutionary coherence of the universe as well as its spiritual significance. For a decade, Primack and Abrams had been co-teaching a course on Cosmology and culture, from which this book developed. Joel R. Primack (born July 14, 1945) is a professor of physics and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz and is a member of the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics. Primack received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1966 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1970. His fields of study are relativistic quantum field theory, cosmology, and particle astrophysics. He is also involved in supercomputer simulations of dark matter models. He directs the University of California High-Performance AstroComputing Center (UC-HiPACC). Primack is best known for his co-authorship with George Blumenthal, Sandra Moore Faber, and Martin Rees of the theory of cold dark matter (CDM) in 1984. He co-authored two books with Nancy Abrams, The View from the Center of the Universe (2006) and The New Universe and the Human Future (2011). He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Nancy Ellen Abrams has a degree in the history and philosophy of science from the University of Chicago and a law degree from the University of Michigan. With her husband, world-renowned cosmologist Joel R. Primack, she co-authored a prizewinning article on quantum cosmology and Kabbalah, as well as numerous articles on science policy, space policy, and possible cultural implications of modern cosmology. She works as a scholar to put the discoveries of modern cosmology into a cultural context. In this strikingly original book, a world-renowned cosmologist and an innovative writer of the history and philosophy of science uncover an astonishing truth: Humans actually are central to the universe. What does this mean for our culture and our personal lives? The answer is revolutionary: a science-based cosmology that allows us to understand the universe as a whole and our extraordinary place in it.

Seller: Malcolm Books, Thetford, United Kingdom
First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Good. 1st Edition in This Form. 4 page sheet. Original Theatre Programme for The Merchant of Venice Performed at the Royal Lyceum Theatre March 1898 (lists 3 performances, so was for either 4th, 5th or 6th of March performance). Generally fair/good condition for a Victorian programme, i.e., no inscriptions, has been folded in quarter and minimal staining (see scans). Notable for collectors as performance programme lists both Henry Irving as Shylock & Ellen Terry as Portia. Lists Henry Irving as sole lessee and manager of the Royal Lyceum but interestingly though he became the first actor ever awarded a knighthood, the programme does not list him anywhere as Sir Henry Irving. Though is does state "This Theatre is lighted by Electricity, supplied by the Electricity Supply Corporation, Ltd" as at this time Electric lighting was not common, Gas and oil lighting were common. Size: 17 x 21.5cm. Approx.
