Frühes programmatisches Werk des Würzburger Gerichtsmediziners und Psychiatrie-Theoretikers Johann Baptist Friedreich (1796 - 1862). Friedreich lehrte Allgemeine Pathologie und Semiotik an der Universität Würzburg, wurde wegen seiner liberalen Ansichten aber 1832 im Rahmen der sog, Demagogenverfolgungaus dem akademischen Dienst entfernt und war von diesem Zeitpunkt an im Range eines Professors als Gerichtsarzt tätig. Friedreich veröffentlichte 35 Schriften, vorrangig auf den gebieten der Psychologie, Psychiatrie und Gerichtsmedizin. Einband etwas berieben (Leinen mit zwei kleinen Durchriebstellen) sowie am oberen Buchrücken etwas fleckig; Kanten etwas bestoßen. F. war ein ebenso vielseitiger als fruchtbarer Schriftsteller; abgesehen von einzelnen juristischen, philosophischen und philologischen Werken war es neben der gerichtlichen Medicin die Psychiatrie und zwar besonders auch wieder die forensische Seite derselben, welche er durch eine Masse von litterarischen Producten und durch Gründung verschiedener Zeitschriften, von denen die Blätter für gerichtliche Anthropologie als ?Friedreich's Blätter für gerichtliche Medicin? noch fortbestehen, wesentlich förderte. Seine Schriften zeichnen sich durch großen Sammlerfleiß, gründliches Studium und reiche Gelehrsamkeit aus, doch sind manche etwas zu rasch gearbeitet. April 1796 in Würzburg; 29. Januar 1862 ebenda) war ein deutscher Mediziner, Gerichtsarzt und Dichter. Er war einer der führenden psychiatrischen Theoretiker vom somatischen Standpunkt. Johann Baptist studierte in Würzburg Medizin. 1813 wurde er im Corps Franconia Würzburg recipiert. 1818 wurde er in Würzburg mit der Arbeit De nisu formativa promoviert und am 13. Juli 1819 Privatdozent. Im Jahr 1821 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor der Allgemeinen Therapie, hielt ab 1825 die Vorlesung Pathologie und Therapie der psychischen Krankheiten nach Heinroth und wurde 1830 ordentlicher Professor der Heilkunde an der Universität Würzburg. Im Jahr 1830 wurde er auch zum Mitglied der Leopoldina gewählt. Er lehrte in Würzburg "allgemeine Pathologie und Semiotik" (Lehre von den Krankheitsanzeichen). Seine akademische Karriere war allerdings kurz. Der Obrigkeit erschien der unter Studenten beliebte Friedreich politisch zu gefährlich und er wurde 1832 von seinen Ämtern suspendiert sowie im Rang eines Professors auf die Stelle eines Gerichtsarztes in Weißenburg abgeschoben. Rufe an ausländische Universitäten lehnte er jedoch ab. Stattdessen erbat und erhielt er 1838 die Gerichtsarztstellen von Straubing und 1843 von Ansbach. 1850 wurde er schließlich Gerichtsarzt in Erlangen und Honorarprofessor an der Universität Erlangen. Nachdem er 1855 in den Ruhestand trat, kehrte er nach Würzburg zurück. Friedreich argumentierte in seinen psychiatrischen Schriften kritisch gegenüber Johann Christian August Heinroth, dass jede seelische Erkrankung auf körperlicher Regelwidrigkeit beruhe, und auch die seelischen Ursachen seelischer Erkrankung mittels des Körperlichen wirkten. Friedreich setzte seine vielfältigen Interessen aber auch in juristischen, philologischen, philosophischen und dichterischen Arbeiten um. Er gab ferner verschiedene Fachzeitschriften heraus, darunter die Blätter für gerichtliche Anthropologie und Friedreichs Blätter für gerichtliche Medizin.
