Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST PENGUIN EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. MMP, incl. b/w illustrations by Ardizzone. Edgewear and a little creasing, wrappers spotted and gently rubbed. Browned, some creasing. Inscribed by Farjeon in blue biro to verso of biog. page: "To Bertha and Charles/ with love from/ Eleanor/ Christmas 1960". Else, pleasingly clean and tight. Very good Inscribed in year of publication. Little is known about Farjeon's dedicatees, Charles and Bertha Rose. It seems likely that Bertha (née Hagart) is the Royal Academy of Music (RAM)-trained, South African pianist, who was active professionally both in South Africa and Britain in the 1950s. If this is the case, it also seems probable that the two women met through Farjeon's elder brother Harry, who taught at RAM for 45 years. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Italian Peepshow, Eleanor Farjeon, illustrated by Edward Ardizzone, pub. Oxford University Press, 1960 1st ed. 96 pages, black and white drawings throughout. Red cloth, VG. Top edge of pages a little dusty, nothing to write home about. Jacket is not clipped [9s 6d] minimal wear. Couple of small, very pale areas of splashy foxing to inner panel of jacket at front which have offset to end paper. We take Ardizzone for granted, I think. He manages to convey so much in the 'attitude' of his deceptively simple figures. A really fine illustrator second to none in the depiction of children. He was a good fit with Farjeon, who never strayed very far into the darker recesses of childhood, but was content to portray the tenderness and simple delights of the child's world. Jacket now in protective acetate sleeve [removable].
