Boards in d.j. Trans. Arthur Symons; introd. Alec Brown (illustrator). 1st thus. 1st ed thus, original black cloth boards with gilt lettering to boards, dustjacket, pp 408. Dustjacket worn to edges with small closed tears, very small chip to lower corner, small damp stain on the reverse side which is not viisble from the front. Near-fine in very good dustjacket. Drunkard (L'Assommoir) is part of Zola's Rougon-Macquart sequence. It was criticised at the time for being vulgar. In his 1877 preface, which is included here, Zola writes: "It was attacked with unexampled brutality, denounced, accused of every time. [.] My work will defend me. It is a work of truth, the first novel of the people which is not false". An uncommon edition in a striking dustjacket.
