Condition: new. Rice, John (illustrator). (Hardcover, 1998 ). (1906) 1998 new edition. 8vo (158 x 236mm). Ppvi,77,i. B/w photographs, b/w illustrations by John Rice. Gilt-decorated cloth-backed blue boards, pictorial slipcase. Slight scuff else fine in slipcase. Edition limited to 1500 copies. "A book as British and as charming as Tarpon Fishing in Mexico and Florida deserves an introduction which honors author Edward Churchill's expeditionary fondness for isolated strongholds of classic sport; the kind of far-flung enclaves that still draw many of us to what Conrad called the 'darker outposts' of the earth. Judge for yourself if the effort is worthy." Randy Wayne White, in his Introduction to this book. Includes forty photographs by the author, mostly of leaping tarpon. An attractive modern reprint of one of the scarcest of the old tarpon fishing books. .

Manuscript / Paper Collectible
On 18 October 1851 the Duke married as his third wife his first cousin Jane Francis Clinton Stewart (1818-1897), daughter of the Honourable Edward Richard Stewart and granddaughter of John Stewart, 7th Earl of Galloway. The recipient would appear to a near-relation of the Duchess, as her address is the town-house of the Duchess's mother, Lady Katherine Stewart (d.1863), at 9 Bryanston Square, who is referred to at the start of the letter. 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. 33 lines of closely-written text. He writes that 'Lady Katherine' left a memorandum with him that afternoon, from which it appears 'that if The Duchess of Marlborough dies leaving only one Child, that Child will inherit £20,000 only of the £30000 comprised in the Marriage Settlement, and the remaining £10000 of The Duchess's share of the Berry Grove Farm will go, one half to the Duke and the other half to such persons as The Duchess may choose to appoint to.' He would have to see 'the Settlement or an Abstract of it' to be able to tell 'whether the Duchess's half will then go to the Duke in his marital right, or to The Duchess's Child, or to her Next of Kin as if she had died without having been married'. He continues with a short paragraph on the matter, before concluding that 'It will be better perhaps to say nothing about it while the Duchess is at Blenheim, but it will be well to bear it in mind if she comes to Bryanston Square and I can see her without exciting suspicion'.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. [77] pp. Paintings by John Rice SPENCER-CHURCHILL, Edward George & RICE, John 1st Edition Meadow Run Press 1998 9.25" x 6.25" Introduction by Randy Wayne White with paitings by John Rice. Perhaps the grandest of the rare old tarpon books, this is the author's account of a year spent tarpon fishing at Tampico and Boca Grande in 1905. A British Army captain related to Sir Winston, Spencer-Churchill provides an acerbic, at times fussy, though very British and dryly humorous view of the sport of tarpon fishing. A thoroughly delightful book which includes a section of spectacular early photographs of tarpon. Randy Wayne White is a former fishing guide, the author of the acclaimed Doc Ford series of mystery novels, Batfishing in the Rainforest, and is a contributing editor of Outside Magazine. As new in slipcase Limited to 1500 copies. Green cloth-backed boards in green slipcase with paste-on cover label. Frontis and cover art by John Rice. Photo section containing 41 b&w photos of tarpon fishing. Foreword by Randy Wayne White. A reprint of the elusive 1906 first edition.
56 pp. Small 4to, orig. red cloth, upper cover & spine gilt. [Evesham: Sharp Bros., 1961]. The uncommon account by Spencer-Churchill (1876-1964), who inherited Northwick Park and its once glorious collections from his grandmother, the widow of the third and final Lord Northwick. From the preface: "This is a catalogue of pictures, 'rescued' by me from dirt, overpainting and oblivion. They are now much nearer to the state in which their creators left them, and wished them to be seen. I am glad to know that the number of their legacies has been increased, and that their fine works now give pleasure to many." The present catalogue concludes with the text of a speech about collecting given to the "Rotary Club, Salisbury, Rhodesia, 1954." Lists 196 "rescued" paintings with details on the artist, dimensions of the work, and frequent notes on provenance. Fine copy.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 172 x 120mm; pp. [8, index], [129 numbered leaves, filled] rear endpapers used. A revealing volume of newspaper cuttings, mainly from 1906 8, put together by Edward G. Spencer-Churchill, Winston's cousin and an aspiring politician himself. At this early point there are close parallels between the two men's careers. Spencer-Churchill was studying all the major 1906 General Election issues, which were also Winston's concerns at the time - Chinese labour in the colonies, and education reform at home. Some of the clippings are of Spencer-Churchill's own published letters to newspapers, but he also records the activities of his more famous cousin, at one point noting in manuscript 'Winston in H of C' alongside a clipping. There is some pencil highlighting to the clippings, and the volume ends with a series of typed and manuscript pages concerning tariffs and investments - including a signed letter from an employee of the Tariff Commission. Tariff reform was the major issue within the Conservative Party in the period leading up to the 1906 General Election. Good condition: binding a little shaken; cover with partially removed label.
