Book
Hardcover. Condition: Near Good. No Jacket. Wyeth, N.C. (Color Plates) ;Eichenberg, Fritz (B&W Illustrations) (illustrator). 3rd Edition. From the foreword: "This anthology of children's literature is divided into two parts. The first contains the material for children's reading. . . . Part II contains appendices with information which may be helpful, as background material, to the young teacher or to the one in a small country school where such information is not available. A graded bibliography is also found at the end of Part II." The foreword was signed by Evelyn Ray Sickles (1895-1981), who was Supervisor of Work with Children at the Indianapolis Public Library. One of the original editors was Edna Johnson (1876-1967). Ms. Johnson was a member of the faculty of Indiana University who taught the courses in children?s literature in the Department of English. This copy is from the 3rd Revised edition of 1959 which still had the full-color illustrations of N. C. Wyeth after his death and is also after the death of Carrie E. Scott (1874-1943), one of the original editors. Her successor at the Indianapolis Public Library, Evelyn R. Sickles, assumed Scott's role in compiling and expanding this bibliography. This successful anthology required at least three editors, so Frances Clarke Sayers joined the editorial group. Frances Clarke Sayers (1897?1989) was an American children's librarian, author of children's books, and lecturer at UCLA on children?s literature. In 1999, American Libraries named her one of the "100 Most Important Leaders We Had in the 20th Century" Newell Convers Wyeth (1882 ? 1945), known as N. C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created more than 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books. He is the father of Andrew Wyeth and the grandfather of Jamie Wyeth, both well-known American painters. The artwork for this edition was enhanced by contracting the services of Fritz Eichenberg (1901?1990) who was a German-American illustrator and arts educator who worked primarily in wood-engraving. His best-known works were concerned with religion, social justice and non-violence. This anthology was a standard for American educators because it gave grade & age specific recommendations for children literature, specific readings and extensive details. There are illustrations from classic illustrators, biographies of authors, list of book awards with yearly winners and selected stories & poems to be read. Over 20 full page color illustrations by N.C. Wyeth including end-pages. Wyeth plates and 8-page illustration insert are not numbered. xxxv + 1239pp+30? Hardcover has lime cloth boards with green shadowbox on front & green lettering on spine, gold lettering & designs on both front and spine, in a mylar protected price-clipped DJ. This copy was retired from a public library. During the book check-in, the edges of the jacket were glued onto the end-page pastedowns as well as a filing sticker was pasted to foot of dust jacket spine. This damage to the dust jacket could only partially be repaired. The remains are now protected by a mylar cover. Interior required repair to become firmly bound, also required page repairs from mis-handling due to weight. When retired from public library, rfep was cut out because of check-out envelope. Still, book has been treated with respect, no markings (except library ink-stamp on front paste-down) found. Square corners, gutters repaired, but copy shows it has been opened and read. ?
