An eleventh edition of the hugely popular Bon Gaultier ballads, compiled under pseudonym by Scottish poets William Edmonstoune Ayton (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909). First published in magazines in 1845, this copy is beautifully illustrated by Richard Doyle (1824-1883), John Leech (1817-1864) and Alfred Crowquill (i.e. Alfred Henry Forrester)(1804-1872). Doyle, the artist of the first cover of Punch magazine, was a longtime collaborator of Leech, who in turn enjoyed fame as the first illustrator of Dickens' A Christmas Carol (London, 1843).
