Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 16 pages. Published in 2013. Artist Book. The 77th title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Carol E. Richards. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Carol E. Richards' "Birds Have Wings". One of the most beautiful One Picture Books ever. "Having difficulty identifying a particular species of bird through her spotting scope, Carol E. Richards took a photograph through the lens to assist with her research. The resulting picture turned out to be far more than a tool for verification. It had a mood and visual content the artist was drawn to, and led to the creation of a series of beautiful, dream-like vignettes. 'Unlike some photographs of wildlife that are clear and provide answers', says Richards, 'these soft visuals raise questions. It was a surprising discovery; as I spied on these birds, I could see their charm and individuality' " (Publisher's blurb). Not everyone loves cats or dogs. But you're not human if you do not love birds. An absolute "must-have" title for Carol E. Richards and bird lovers/collectors. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Martin Usborne's "Fox About Town". Affectionate and witty photographs of a fox. "In 2006, photographer Martin Usborne spent three days walking around London in the company of a fox, hired from a taxidermist at a rate higher than it would cost to rent a Ferrari. It was money well-spent. Usborne had great fun interacting with people on the street, and the fox, temporarily at least, was given a new lease of life. Follow this Fantastic Mr. Fox as he visits a grocery store, joins the queue at an ATM, and drops in at a good old British pub. Truly, this is one urbane fox" (Publisher's blurb). Simply delightful. An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Rob McDonald. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Rob McDonald's "Birthplace". Quietly beautiful in the most evocative, "memento mori" way. "When Eskine Caldwell died in 1987, his place in the history of pop culture was already assured. The bare-woods house outside the small town of Moreland, Georgia where Caldwell was born in 1903 serves as the subject of Rob McDonald's book. 'Walking around the house, looking at the shelves of Caldwell's books, the case of memorabilia, I tried to forget about the celebrity. I found myself reflecting on how surely place shapes identity, how it inspires a worldview, how memory and imagination begin before we know it' " (Publisher's blurb). Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Doug Rickard's "All Eyes On Me". His first and only contribution to the One Picture Book Series, one of the most relevant to our "divided" time, and one of the Series' very best. "Life deals you a hand. A Royal Flush. A pair of Twos. Our American legacy, the horrors behind us, the gaps between us, the permeating malice. It's palpable. These pictures speak. I don't need to say much. Our past, our present whispers of the future. Actions and reactions, losing hands and stacked decks. Suspicious looks, sideways glances, expectations, but not of success. Lots of Twos" (Doug Rickard). That was actually saying a lot, on behalf of minorities, African-American as well as Hispanic as well as everyone else, all of it so true. An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Steve Kahn. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Steve Kahn's "Corridors". Eerie, haunted, and haunting symbolic-images of desolation and despair. "Produced in 1979, Steve Kahn's Corridor images were the final chapter of his black-and-white project, 'The Hollywood Suites 1974-76'. In keeping with the style and concerns of the earlier work, the Corridor photographs were originally intimate, pull-and-peel Polaroid prints shot in Hollywood's aging apartment buildings. These furtively snapped images of common hallways were intended to capture the stifling desperation of the tenants' lives through the metaphor of shared interior space. The Series was Kahn's first venture into color" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Steve Kahn collectors. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Elaine Ling. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Elaine Ling's "Habitacion Cubana". Her first, and posthumous, contribution to the One Picture Book Series. "Elaine Ling was an exuberant adventurer, traveller, and photographer who felt most at home backpacking her view camera across the great deserts of the world and sleeping under the stars. Born in Hong Kong, she grew up in Canada and studied the piano, cello, and medicine. She received her medical degree from the University of Toronto, and practiced medicine among various First Nations peoples in Canada's North and Pacific Northwest as well as on the other side of the world, in Abu Dhabi and Nepal. Elaine Ling passed away in August of this year after a long illness. This vibrant and colorful book comprises seven pairs of photographs made in Cuba, on two separate trips: The first in 2002, and the second in 2015. In each of the pairs, Ling presents a chosen subject in black-and-white, and again, thirteen years later, in color. The double layers of time and color create diptychs that can be contemplated endlessly, always with new discoveries to be made. Elaine Ling's photographs have been widely exhibited and published, and are included in the Permanent Collection of museums around the world, including those of the Bibliotheque Nationale Paris; Musee de la Photographie Charleroi, Belgium; Fotografie Forum International Frankfurt; Museet for Fotokunst Odense, Denmark; Centro Portugues de Fotografia Porto, Portugal; Scavi Scaligeri International Centre of Photography Verona, Italy; Fototeca de Cuba Havana; Lishui Museum of Photography; Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas; and the Brooklyn Museum New York" (Publisher's blurb). Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Julien Coulommier's "Soleil Cou Coupe". The artist/photographer's first and only contribution to the One Picture Book Series, which culminates the multi-page poem by Freddy De Vree. "The Belgian photographer, author, and critic Julien Coulommier has been an important figure in Western European avant-garde art since the early 1950's. His association with Otto Steinert led Coulommier to be seen as a representative of subjective photography in Belgium and Holland, but his most important stimulus came from the Belgian surrealist Marcel Broodthaers, with whom he became friends. Coulommier started out at a time when abstract art and figurative art were seen very much as separate genres. With great skill and imagination he has melded these opposing styles, presenting the abstract figuratively and the figurative in an abstract way. He has long been concerned with exploring the difference between knowledge about things and images of them. Freddy De Vree has written a memorable and vividly descriptive poem in honor of Coulommier's work and it complements perfectly the original print tipped into the final page of each book" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Julien Coulommier and Freddy De Vree collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Javier Carrillo's "Las Trocas Angelinas, con sus Mercancia". One of the last four concluding titles in the Series. "Javier Carrillo created a suite of 6 'suicide prints', a type of linoleum print considered to be the single most difficult form of multicolor printing, each featuring what is a common sight across this country and many others: A small, well-worn pickup truck filled to the breaking point with tools or merchandise. In Carrillo's prints, the pickup trucks with their humble yet priceless cargo - used wooden pallets, freshly-picked oranges, lawn-mowing equipment - become almost heroic in their stoicism, and one can't help but draw a comparison between them and the burros that they have replaced. The original, signed photograph included with each copy of the book is one of the snapshots Carrillo made as a sketch for his finished studio prints" (Publisher's blurb). "My life, society, and culture have given me much to think about, but I am able to express only a small amount of it with words. I prefer to express myself through my artwork" (Javier Carrillo). Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Eiji Ina's "Wacht". A dazzling One Picture Book, one of the very best in the entire Series. "In the 72 reproductions that make up 'Wacht', Japanese artist Eiji Ina documents in detail the omnipresence of security cameras around the world. This is a book of anomalies, as the cameras that simultaneously protect and monitor us vary from humorous and ominous, subtle to clunky, hi-tech to classical" (Publisher's blurb). "Wacht" is the German word for "awake" (reverse the letters, it becomes "watch" in English), and Eiji Ina's photographic inventory of "always-wide-awake" and "always-watching-you" surveillance cameras is an instant classic. An absolute "must-have" title for Eiji Ina collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. Presents Eduardo del Valle's and Mirta Gomez's "En Vista". Their second contribution to the One Picture Book Series. "Takes us on a rare and astonishing journey into the transformation of the human form after death. In the rural cemeteries of Yucatan, Mexico, the dead are not normally embalmed before burial. Typically, the remains are unearthed after three years in the ground and transferred to an ossuary or makeshift container for all eternity and for all to view. 'En Vista' offers a strikingly beautiful and memorable selection of 14 color reproductions and one original Type-C print from an original negative. The book opens with an insightful excerpt from 'The Labyrinth of Solitude' by Octavio Paz" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez collectors. An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by David H. Gibson. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents David H. Gibson's "Water Cascade: A Sequence". His first and only contribution to the One Picture Book Series. "Water Cascade, which he photographed in British Columbia, is a sophisticated, thoughtful, and subtle sequence of cascading water 'still lifes'. Gibson's work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, and was included in the important exhibition, 'Masterworks of American Photography at the Amon Carter Museum' " (Publisher's blurb). "Still lifes" is an apt description for these austerely beautiful, painterly photographs: The gushing waters evoke a sense of stillness rather than flux or movement. An absolute "must-have" title for David H. Gibson collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Chris Arnold and Corey Arnold. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Corey Arnold's and Chris Arnold's "Fishing With My Dad 1978-1995". One of the most charming collections in the entire One Picture Book Series. "Arnold 'curates' a group of photographs his father made of him growing up. In each of the photographs, Arnold is either fishing or showing off his catch. Knowing who the subject of these photographs is, his relationship to the one who made these photographs, and how his passions for photography and fishing would later play out make 'Fishing With My Dad' resonate on many levels" (Publisher's blurb). Corey Arnold's debut collection, "Fishwork: The Bering Sea" (2011), is one of the best photography books of our time. "Fishing With My Dad" vibrates (a one-word way of saying "resonates on so many levels") because it reminds us of what attracted us to photographs in the first place. It also helps restore a genuine humanity to a contemporary photography scene that is obsessed with sterile "concept". An absolute "must-have" title for Corey Arnold collectors. By combining unrelated images into unlikely combinations, the artist creates new memories as a way of addressing past experiences and relationships. Her 'reconstructed memories' offer creative insight into the act and the art - the how and the why - of something nearly everyone does: Taking family photos" (Publisher's blurb). Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Leon Borensztein's "Portraits II". His first and only contribution to the One Picture Book Series, a continuation of his seminal "American Portraits 1979-1989" collection. "After emigrating to the United States from Poland, Leon Borensztein took a fly-by-night job as a traveling portrait photographer, visiting homes and businesses across the country and making portraits for working-class clientele in the style of the Sears Portrait Studios. During these sessions, Borensztein would set up a generic backdrop behind the subject, while moving the camera back far enough so that the camera captured glimpses of the subjects' personal spaces or belongings. The resulting body of work provides a rich sociological document. Individually, these are some of the most compelling and touching portraits of their time" (Publisher's blurb). Born in England, Steve Pyke has been working as a staff photographer on The New Yorker since early 2005. Every Levy grid-portrait consists of multiple photographs of his subject, taken from various perspectives and distances, then combined to create one portrait that folds out, map-like, from its hardbound case. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Ron Van Dongen's "A. Angustatum". His second contribution to the One Picture Book Series. "Adding a subtle twist to his first One Picture Book, 'Rosa Ferreus', Ron van Dongen follows up with 'A. Angustatum', a frame-by-frame recording of 'Arisaema Angustatum, 2001', in its transition from a tender, unassuming shoot to the mature Arisaema shown in all its full glory. Van Dongen is the subject of five monographs by Nazraeli Press, the first four of which featured his black-and-white work, while the most recent, 'Effusus', documents the artist's own transition to color work" (Publisher's blurb). One of the things that makes the collection so arresting is that the eroticism of the photographs (which may also be found in Ron van Dongen's "Rosa Ferreus"), is unmistakable yet ever-so-subtle. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Nancy Honey and Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs, design, and mise-en-scene by Nancy Honey. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Nancy Honey's "Poodle Parlour". A charming, lighthearted, and witty sequence of a visit to the eponymous parlor. Of all pets and perhaps because of its French origin, the poodle is most closely identified with luxury, indulgence, and discriminating taste. Nancy Honey shows how a pet becomes an extension, not just a part, of the lifestyle of her mistress (every poodle "master" is a she). The care the poodle gets is always excessive, and in some cases, the mistress comes to look like her poodle, the most famous example being Elizabeth Taylor, who sports a "poodle hairdo", and is identified with her pet poodles. An absolute "must-have" title for Nancy Honey collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. In it, she displays reproductions of her one-off digital prints (made by digitally printing the extraordinary self-portraits for which she is best-known) onto e hagaki ('picture postcards'). The book concludes with an original portrait printed over a vintage postcard" (Publisher's blurb). After graduating from art school, Emi Anrakuji was diagnosed with a cerebral tumor, which prevented her from working for more than a decade. During her agonizing recovery, she began to make woodblock prints, then turned to photography. There is only one way to describe what she has achieved in "E Hagaki": Simply stunning. The resulting full-face portraits are larger-than-life, close-cropped black-and-white photographs that are as striking as they are unsettling. An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Eduardo Del Valle's and Mirta Gomez's "Four Sections of Time". The photographers' stunningly beautiful and moving documentation, as aptly captured by the title, of the effects of seasonal and linear time on a single structure in Labna, Yucatan over several years. Todd Hido photographed a house in "Taft Street" over four seasons, showing the moody character of the changing of seasons. What Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez have photographed is flux, showing ruin and survival at the same time. The Cuban-born husband and wife team has worked collaboratively for thirty years, receiving international acclaim for their photographs of subjects in a state of flux. They are recipients of Guggenheim, Cintas, and NEA fellowships in photography. Their work has been widely exhibited in the United States and abroad, and is in the Permanent Collections of The Museum of Modern Art New York, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Brooklyn Museum. The great photographer Lewis Baltz, who is best-known for his desolate urban landscape work, once referred to the work of photographers like Hamish Fulton, Paul Hill, Humphrey Repton, and Richard Long as "land artists", photographers who have a genuine connection with the land in a way that their predecessors (like Ansel Adams) did not. These are very different artist/photographers but what unites them all is a love of the land and its structures, whose primary characteristics are flux, change, metamorphosis, and ultimately, evolution (in the artistic sense). Ansel Adams sought to capture majesty through breathtaking photographs of scenic landscapes and stunning landmarks. What is uniquely and profoundly moving about the "land artists" is a search not for static and immutable Essences but for Reality in all its concreteness, ruin, and beauty. An absolute "must-have" title for Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez collectors. This is an Artist Proof of "Fall 1997" and is indicated as such ("A/P") on the Back Limitation Page. His third contribution to the One Picture Book Series, an homage-of-sorts to the iconic British ritual, drinking tea (long since passed on to her former colonies as well). Beautifully captured and evoked in Parr's trademark saturated colors, "7 Cups of Tea" is a continuation of the exploration that Parr began with "7 Communist Still Lifes" and followed up with "7 Colonial Still Lifes". It marks a return to top form for the unsustainably prolific photographer. An absolute "must-have" title for Martin Parr collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such in pencil on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with an original color print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on verso by Martin Parr. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The remaining copies from the publisher command $150. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. 6 color plates, 1 original print. The most important and most influential British photographer of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ONE PICTURE BOOK AND MARTIN PARR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1580053572. Signed by Author.
