Book First Edition
Condition: Very Good. Cover designed by Lord Berners. (illustrator). April 1935. First edition. The Architectural Press. London. April 1935. First edition. Paperback; spiral-bound wrappers. 64 pages. Illustrated throughout in b&w. English. 230x185mm. 0.3kg. Very good; light shelf wear to wrappers, spiral binding solid, short 1.5cm tear to top edge of first leaf; a very good copy of a fragile item. A very well-preserved first edition copy of Wiltshire, one of the earliest Shell Guides, after Betjeman's Cornwall. The series was published as guidebooks for the aspiring, car-driving metropolitan sightseer. The guide includes maps and chapters on antiquities, industries, nature notes, war and sport. It ends with a gazetteer compiled by Edith Olivier. Lord Berners designed the front and back covers, creating a collage of various photographs, old and new, of Wiltshire places and people. The majority of the photographs were taken by Maurice Beck and Christopher Sykes contributed a line drawing.
