The book is signed and inscribed on the first front end paper ( 'George Denny Junior, from the author, Lytton, Knebwoth, September 1939 '). This is a biography written by the Earl of Lytton (2nd Earl of Lytton, Victor Alexander George Robert Bulwer-Lytton), about his son Anthony (Viscount Knebworth) who in 1933, while serving with the Auxiliary Air Force, was killed in a plane crash. He was 29. A few pages into the book there is an Author's Note which states 'This book was first put together for private circulation, but as a few friends to whom it was shown pressed me to give it a wider circulation, I have yielded to their suggestion and allowed it to be published.' George Denny, Jr. was a rather famous American, particularly during the 1930s and 1940s. He was the long-time (1935 to 1952!!) moderator of one of radio's first talk shows, America's Town Meeting of the Air, as well as the executive director of the League for Political Education/Town Hall, which produced the program. In 1945 he & ABC Radio were awarded a Peabody Award. 'The edification, the fearlessness and the fair, firm moderation which have characterized George V. Denny's selection and conduct of America's Town Meeting of the Air were never more urgently needed by conscientious listeners. To Mr. Denny we take pleasure in presenting the Peabody Award for the outstanding educational program of 1945. He has the distinction of being the first double winner: Town Meeting received the medal in 1943 and is still the irresistible leader in its field.' I have six other books listed that were signed and inscribed to George Denny Jr., including two by Dorothy Thompson. This book has 16 full-page black-and-white photographs, including the frontispiece. They are all in very nice shape. You can see the covers of the book in the photos provided. They are quite clean. They are also in quite decent condition, particularly taking into account that the book was published in 1936. There are a few shallow dents on the top edge of the front cover. There's a bit of rubbing around the top edge of the spine. The edges are otherwise in very good shape as are the corners. The book is nicely square and very solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are tight, just as you would want them. They are also quite clean. There doesn't appear to be much at all by way of soiling. You may find a spot or two of foxing on a glossy illustration page or on a text page before or after the illustration. Otherwise there's just some darker spots or areas on the front inside cover and front and rear end papers. You can see some of that on the signed first front end paper. The top corner of the front cover got bumped and there is a vague crease, same with the front bottom corner. That's created a small indent just off the top and bottom corners of the early pages, quite minor. Otherwise, I'm not seeing any creasing on any of the subsequent pages. There are a lot of them, 368 to be exact. There are no markings on any of the pages. There are no attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the Earl Of Lytton's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The foreword of the book was written by J.M. Barrie. Nice to be an Earl when you are looking around for an impressive personage the write a foreword. Good timing as well, Barrie died in 1937. The dust jacket is still alive, still present. But it has had some rough moments. As you can see, there is a big chunk of paper missing from the top edge of the spine and a smaller one from the bottom edge. The front and rear cover have fared better with just a few tears and some smaller chipping around the top edge of the front. The flaps are in pretty decent shape. The front flap is price-clipped. There's a small loss off the bottom edge of the front flap. I've had the jacket in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. Inscribed by Author(s).
