(1860), 515 pp. Bon état (petit mques en bords de couv. bel exemplaire par ailleurs, bien protégé sous papier cristal et avec intérieur frais) pour ce livre écrit par un jésuite français du XVIIe siècle (1621-1687). Le père Rapin reste connu non seulement comme historien du Jansénisme, mais également comme poète en latin (nom de plume : Renatus Rapinus). L'éditeur de l'ouvrage, l'abbé Emmanuel Domenech était un personnage hors-norme. Envoyé en mission au Etats-Unis pendant sa formation de prêtre, c'est au Texas que ce natif des bords de Saône fut ordonné. Pendant plusieurs années, il sillonna les U.S.A. de long en large, côtoyant de près les différents peuples indiens. De retour en France, il publia quelques ouvrages au début des années 1860, dont le présent ouvrage, avant de répartir outre-mer, notamment au Mexique, il devint brièvement membre du cabinet de l'Empereur Maximilien (1864-1867). Finalement, il revint définitivement en France en 1867 mais, en 1870-1871, il fut de nouveau dans le feu de l'action, comme aumônier dans l'armée de Mac-Mahon, puis dans l'Armée de la Loire (Chanzy). Exemplaire en provenance de la bibliothèque du prof. Jean Mesnard (1921-2016), éminent spécialiste de Pascal et de la littérature du XVIIe siècle, normalien, agrégé de lettres, qui fut professeur à la Sorbonne et doyen de l'Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques. Certaines éditions ont une illustration en N&B sur la page de titre mais ce n?est pas le cas ici. La reliure est en très bon état (voir les images) sans trace d?usure digne de mention. L?intérieur est en excellent état aussi, le tout étant solidement cousu sans pages ou cahiers lâche. Toutes les illustrations sonty bien présentes. Nous devons cependant signaler la présence occasionnelle et de diverses intensités de taches de roussures. Une estimation rapide m?incite à dire que le quart de l?ouvrage en est affecté mais généralement de façon mineur et quelques fois de façon moyenne sans jamais recouvrir l?entièreté d?une page, loin de là. Les planches sont parfois affectés mais généralement au verso, parfois au recto mais en marge et dans deux cas une tache touche à la gravure mais sans l?affecter outre-mesure. Somme toute un bel exemplaire de cet ouvrage rare auquel il manque souvent certaines planches, ici toutes présentes.
