In essa il Mabillon, forte della sua erudizione in campo paleografico e diplomatico, vi sostenne l'importanza degli studi monastici (di cui offre un piano di studi), da praticarsi accanto agli altri doveri della vita monastica, e del ruolo importante che in passato ebbero ed ancora avevano i monasteri nella conservazione e nella trasmissione di manoscritti e di importanti patrimoni bibliografici, mentre alcuni avversari del Mabillon affermavano che lo studio veniva addirittura ad alimentare le eresie.
