A used clean, sound copy with very minor overall shelf wear. The tape is a former rental in excellent condition with only some light surface damage from a label along the bottom edge of the top tape cassette label. The paperboard sleeve shows very minor shelf wear primarily in the form of some light surface rubbing on the back near the bottom edge. A full screen format VHS tape of a notable Dutch foreign language film. This is a film version of a popular classic of Netherland literature, the 1938 novel by Ferdinand Bordewijk. It is set in Rotterdam, Netherlands in the 1920s. The city's most feared baliff, the curse of the poor and an agent of law without compassion is discovered stabbed to death. A self-taught lawyer who was just abale to pass his exams was the last person to see the baliff alive. The police want to know why he visited the old man, and the young barrister is ready to tell the story of a lifetime. This movie is a winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. First Floor Features, 1997, 1 DVD (ca.119 min.), in originele hoes.= Rotterdam, de jaren dertig. Deurwaarder Dreverhaven (Jan Decleir) is een machtig man zonder scrupules. Zijn naam is gevreesd bij de kansarme bevolking. Wanneer Joba (Betty Schuurman),zijn huishoudster, een kind van hem verwacht, wil zij niet met hem trouwen en verlaat zijn huis. Ook na de geboorte van hun zoon, Katadreuffe (Fedja van Huet), weigert ze iets van hem aan te nemen. Dreverhaven ervaart dit als een eerloze afwijzing en vanaf dat moment dwarsboomt hij waar mogelijk zijn onwettige zoon. De leergierige en ambitieuze jongen zet alles op alles om zijn milieu te ontworstelen. Na enkele tegenslagen komt hij terecht in het advocatenkantoor Stroomkoning. Gegrepen door deze imponerende, chique wereld komt het levensdoel van Katadreuffe onwrikbaar vast te staan: advocaat zal hij worden. Drevehaven ziet de ontwikkelingen met lede ogen aan en de strijd tussen vader en zoon ontbrandt in alle hevigheid. Niets kan Katadreuffe van zijn doel af brengen. Zelfs zijn gevoelens voor de mooie en sympathieke Lorna Te George (Tamar van den Dop) blijven onuitgesproken. Gedreven door de vloek van het verleden bereidt hij zich voor op de onvermijdelijke, noodlottige confrontatie met de man met wie hij door bloed verbonden is.
