Facsimile signatures below dedication: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens. To Whom each in his separate sphere, two followers dedicate their efforts toward interpreting and perpetuating his great classic, A Christmas Carol, Everett Shinn, Lionel Barrymore." Wonderful two page spread at front and back endpapers of Philadelphia city street scene in the season with what appears to be the back of Scrooge bending into the middle of street players. Antiquarian bookplate at front endpaper: "From the Library of Fred and Betty Hardy". Bind fine; hinges intact. Beautifully and vibrantly illustrated with full-page designs in color by Everett Shinn. Black & white dynamic vignettes throughout. Sharp enjoyable rarity. Everett Shinn's illustrations for Dickens' classic are Yuletide festive, full of detail, and sometimes uniquely frightening. He was a brilliant American painter and member of the "Ashcan" urban realist set. He began as a Philadelphia newspaper illustrator with his vibrant imagery demonstrating a rare iconic movement or motion just before photography became widely utilized. His best effectively captured urban life in the first years of the twentieth century, in both a realist and romantic spirit. His most ambitious paintings - The London Hippodrome, The Orchestra Pit: Old Proctor's Fifth Avenue Theater - are among the greatest theatrical works in American art. He also was a model for the protagonist of Theodore Dreiser's novel The "Genius".
