L'autore, illustre patriota e soldato risorgimentale, come scrive Piero Pieri, intendeva di aver per primo scoperto il principio della massa quale principio sommo, dominatore e regolatore della guerra in tutte le sue forme e le sue esigenze. una innegabile personalità di interprete della guerra. e a noi sembra il maggior teorico italiano del secolo XIX. Si proponeva di giovare alla patria con un libro che servisse di guida nella prossima guerra di liberazione ai molti giovani chiamati ad esercitare il comando. E lo Sticca, che, concordemente col Rocchi, ritiene il Decristoforis superiore come trattatista allo stesso Jomini: .Essa mira a mostrare, per via di esempi storici, sapientemente scelti, che la formula della vittoria decisa dall'urto della massa è immanente nella scienza della guerra, ed universale. Giuseppe Monsagrati in D.B.I., XXXIII, 1987 (con bibliografia cui rimandiamo): In questo testo, giudicato da taluni come la più importante opera apparsa in Italia sulla guerra nel secolo scorso (Rochat, p. 391), da altri inserito impropriamente nel filone proudhoniano, il Decristoforis, partendo dalla analisi delle guerre rivoluzionarie di fine '700 e soprattutto sulla base della sterminata casistica delle campagne napoleoniche, enunciava quello che per lui era il principio sommo dell'arte militare: la massa come fattore decisivo della vittoria (ossia della disarticolazione, più che della distruzione fisica, dell'esercito nemico). Sviluppando questo assunto con procedimento simile a quello adottato per l'opera sul Credito ma senza la stessa capacità di persuasione, il D. subordinava il raggiungimento dell'obiettivo primario alla creazione di un esercito di caserma a lunga ferma (sul modello, ha osservato il Pieri, non tanto delle armate napolconiche quanto di quelle di Federico II di Prussia), compatto, ordinato, guidato da ufficiali.di carriera e tenuto insieme da una disciplina ferrea e da un senso rigoroso della gerarchia. La struttura da lui ideata era così caratterizzata sottoilprofilo professionale da escludere esplicitamente ogni ricorso a quella guerra per bande tanto cara ai democratici. E in questo quadro alcuni fugaci richiami al solidarismo proudhoniano e, soprattutto, qualche concessione al messianismo della giovinezza non erano tali da intaccare una concezione che faceva dell'esercito una istituzione molto selezionata ed informata ad un forte spirito di casta.
