Hardback. Red pebbled cloth, black lettering on front cover and spine, 12mo, 187 pp. King (1893-1975) was studying at Harvard when World War I began. He enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in August, 1914, serving with the 170th Regiment. After being wounded, he was transferred the the 81st Heavy Artillery. When America entered the war in 1917, he was released from the French Army and commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. King saw action at Verdun, the Somme, Champagne, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. No marks in book, front hinge cracked but holding. Covers show light edge wear, series of small holes middle of front joint. In colorful dust jacket that shows chipping, affecting some title lettering at top of spine, 2"x2" piece missing top of rear panel. Book condition VG- in Good+ DJ. Uncommon first edition, later issued under the title "Ten Thousand Shall Fall" in 1930. Binding: HB. Edition: First Edition.
