Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Du Maurier, Daphne. REBECCA. A Play In Three Acts. London: Victor Gollanz Ltd, 1940. First Edition, first and only printing, 1939 copyright date on the verso of the title. 7 ½" by 4 ½", 120pp. A Near Fine copy (black cloth with a paper label to the spine, the slightest abrasion to the boards) in a Near Fine, unrestored, entirely original price-clipped dust jacket (tiny bit of creasing to the spine panel tip else remarkably complete. REBECCA, the author's most famous work, was filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture, and remains one of the most highly acclaimed films of its era. Rebecca's wildly popular 1938 psychological thriller of a woman's obsession with her husband's first wife likely may have encouraged Daphne du Maurier in 1939 to pen her own adaption of it as a three act play, It premiered in early 1940 with Celia Johnson and Margaret Rutherford in the leading roles, and played for six months and 350+ performances at the Queen's Theatre in London's West End until the theater was bombed to bits on September 7th, 1940, during one of the single most deadly air conflicts of the Battle of Britain. THIS COPY HAS DAPHNE DU MAURIER'S PERSONAL SIGNED EX-LIBRIS BOOKPLATE on the front paste-down (the same bookplate one very occasionally finds in the 1938 First Edition of the novel). BUT IT IS ALSO INSCRIBED on the title: "To Clive Hirschhorn/ from/ Daphne du Maurier/ 1989." Hirschhorn was the theater critic for the British Sunday Express. Rebecca, the novel, had a first print run of 20,000 copies. This printing of her theatrical adaptation appears to have had a tiny print run making this volume far more difficult to find in comparison. More so, in this superb condition, ever more so with her signed bookplate, especially with a personal inscription to a known colleague. Inscribed by Author(s).

  • Seller image for Original Autogramm Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) /// Autograph signiert signed signee for sale by Antiquariat im Kaiserviertel | Wimbauer Buchversand

Echtfoto. Tolle Farbfoto der Autorin mit zwei Hunden von Daphne du Maurier bildseitig mit blauem Kuli signiert /// Autogramm Autograph signiert signed signee /// Dame Daphne Busson du Maurier, Lady Browning, DBE (* 13. Mai 1907 in London; ? 19. Cloth. Condition: Good+. FIRST UK EDITION, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. 8vo, with b/w frontispiece and plates. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine sunned, bruising and wear to extremities, edges toned, a few spots. Inscribed by Aldrich in blue biro to ffep: "To Joan Gilbert/ My most attractive interviewer on TV or anywhere/ With thanks and best regards/ Dick Aldrich/ London April 1955", Tony Chance's ex libris and 'librãris' labels to ffep, Times obituary clipping, for Gilbert, pasted to rear fep and pastedown. Else, clean and tidy. In supplied dust jacket: creased and frayed, chipped at extremities, amateur tape repair to reverse, but the fabulous front panel illustration remains bright. A pleasing association copy of Aldrich's best-selling memoir. Good+/ good-only From Aldrich's inscription it seems that Gilbert interviewed him in London in 1955, perhaps during a tour promoting his book. Richard Stoddard Aldrich (19021986) was an American theatrical manager "of great repute", who married Gertrude Lawrence in 1940, becoming her second husband. The couple remained together until her sudden and unexpected death from cancer in 1952. Joan Gilbert (1906-1991) was a British television presenter and personality, who was "'the face' of the BBC's longest running topical television show Picture Page (1936-1952)" (Charlesworth, 2018). She went on to write for the TV Mirror and appear "on the new wave of Women's Programmes on BBC Television such as About the Home" (Marcus, 2010). Like Lawrence, Gilbert was "effervescent and unpredictable" and a popular and provocative figure (ibid). Whilst first published in the US by Greystone Press in 1954 (in a much less fabulous dust jacket), the British edition was the first to feature Daphne Du Maurier's 'Foreword'. Du Maurier and Lawrence had become close when the actor played the lead in the author's play, September Tide (1948). In her foreword tribute, Du Maurier observed of her friend and lover: "An actress of instinct and impulse, of swift and sudden change, of ever-varying mood, she was herself a light that danced and swayed, that burnt, not with a dull lamp's steady glow, but with all the divine uncertainty of flickering candles on a Christmas tree" (Du Maurier, here). From the library of Tony M. Chance. A bibliophile and collector from Bromsgrove, Chance amassed a significant collection of signed modern literature, as well as history and arts books. He frequently extra-illustrated his books with related ephemera, often signed. Diane Charlesworth (2018) 'Female presence at the BBC: Uncovering the hidden history of Joan Gilbert (1938-1962),' paper at Doing Women's Film and Television History Conference IV, UoSouthampton; Laurence Marcus (2010) 'Joan Gilbert,' Teletronic Blog.

The recipient Eileen Margaret Cond (1911-1984), was an enthusiastic autograph collector. The two items are in good condition, lightly aged and creased. On light-blue paper with the same design of letterhead. Both addressed to 'Dear Miss Cond' and both signed 'Angela du Maurier'. ONE (5 March): 2pp, 4to. She apologizes for writing badly: 'my writing is big & I find a small space difficult!' She saw that Cond had 'given up the Deer Park, [i.e. the Deer Park Hotel, Honiton] & felt v. sorry, as altho' I've not been for a long time I always hope to return'. She now has '2 enchanting Pekes [i.e. Pekinese dogs], a brother & sister: AnTONY [sic] & Cleopatra. Am besotted about them!' She ends in the hope that Cond has 'a great success' with her shop. TWO (11 May): 2pp, 12mo. She is sorry that Cond has 'had to wait so long for this answer, but I only got home from the Holy Land 2 days ago, & had had no mail forwarded. A wonderful trip.' She is 'mad about' (i.e. enthusiastic) the 'snap' of Cond's own 'Pekes, they both look bliss'. If Cond should be going to the Devon County Show, she suggests she 'look out for my sister Jeanne who is showing a beautiful great mare, & has Pekes & pugs but I don't think is showing any of these.' She ends 'As you will realise from my new book I still have my precious Tony & Cleo, tho' they're 10 this year.'.

First edition, second printing (a month after the run in June). This is a very near fine copy. The dust wrapper is slightly worn at the edges though has not been price clipped. There is a small brown stain to the rear panel. The internals are clean throughout and free from toning. The text blocks are bright and white, but with some very slight foxing. The author's signature is inscribed "Dearest Tod, with my love, Daphne, Christmas 1949". Tod, the recipient, is actually Maud Waddell, who was one of several governesses for the Du Maurier children, who is regarded as having a strong influence on Daphne in particular for her strength and passion for reading. The nickname, 'Tod', stems from the Beatrix Potter character, Mr. Tod. Overall, this is a fine copy with a sparkling association. In a Cornish house lives the widowed Stella, a woman of considerable gifts and beauty who regularly rejects proposals of marriage from her neighbour Robert Hanson. Cherry, Stella's daughter, brings home her artist husband Evan for the first time and Stella is shocked by the bohemian incompleteness of their marriage.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. Hardcover. Pp. 446. First edition, first printing. Includes original The Book Society bookplate, specifically created for this edition of 'Rebecca' and signed by the author, Daphe Du Maurier. There are very few available copies with the original bookplate, not to mention signed. Bound in publisher's original black cloth with the book's title stamped in gilt. With original dust-jacket, very rare. In very good condition, The dust-jacket shows very light signs of shelf-wear, with very slight tearing at the top of the spine, and very small markings on spine and back of cover. The spine, however, is noticeably faded. Light foxing inside but pages are unmarked, clean and uncreased, with tight binding. Rebecca is a 1938 Gothic novel written by English author Daphne du Maurier. The novel depicts an unnamed young woman who marries a wealthy widower, before discovering that both he and his household are haunted by the memory of his late first wife, the title character. Rebecca sold 2.8 million copies between its publication in 1938 and 1965. It has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen, including a 1939 play by du Maurier herself, and the film Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The book looks like it was originally owned by Joan Henry, an English author and former débutante; she was jailed for passing a fraudulent cheque in 1951 and her best-known works were based on her experiences in prison, the semi-autobiographical Who Lie in Gaol. Bertrand Russell, who was very fond of her, was her mother's first cousin. Her unusual name and her future connections to the publisher Gollancz seem to prove that this was indeed her copy - however we should mention that we could not find any recorded sample of her handwriting which could help us make comparisons with the ownership signature on the bookplate. Signed by Author(s).

Signed presentation inscription from the author to her governess "Tod, with love from Daphne. July 1938" to front free endpaper, light marginal toning and some foxing, upper hinge tinder, original cloth, slight shelf-lean, light fading to spine, spine with short split to head and fraying to foot, joints rubbed, dust-jacket, light fading to spine, spine ends and corners a little chipped, neatly repaired tear to head of upper panel, light creasing to head, extremities rubbed. A superb association copy inscribed from the author to her favourite governess in the month prior to publication. Signed copies of Rebecca are rare, we can only trace a handful at auction, we can find no like association copy. Maud Waddell worked as one of several governesses for the Du Maurier children and she is now regarded as having had an important formative influence on Daphne in particular. Waddell (or, "Tod" as she was nicknamed by the children after the Beatrix Potter character) was a strong, independently-minded woman who instilled in Du Maurier a passion for reading and encouraged her early writing. Writing in her memoirs, Du Maurier recounts some early influences from Waddell's recommendations: "Wilde filled my reading hours, but a more lasting impression was made by the stories of Katherine Mansfield, introduced to me by Tod who had a brother in New Zealand, and I felt instinctively that if I could only one day in the distant future write some sketch that might compare, however humbly, to hers, I need not despair." . Waddell later became a close friend and confidant, and would even serve as governess for Du Maurier's own children many years later. - Du Maurier, Myself When Young: The Shaping of a Writer, 1977. This is the must have book for serious collectors. Inscribed by Author.
