Prix de Rome en 1858, il rapporte de son séjour à la villa Médicis de copies d'uvres des maîtres et de lumineux petits paysages dans la ligné de Corot. Fidèle à ses racines, il peint, après la défaite de 1870, L'Alsace. Elle attend, toile emblématique de la perte de sa province natale. Dès les années 1870 Henner est applaudi au Salon, cumulant commandes de portraits et achats de l'Etat. A côté des nymphes rousses et des scènes idylliques qui consacrent célébrité, il brosse de puissants tableaux religieux. Sa facture renouvelle l'art du modelé, entre ombres et lumières. Contemporain des impressionnistes, Henner a su imposer avec éclat un autre chromatisme moderne. L'exposition, la première à Paris depuis un siècle, regroupe plus d'une centaine d'uvres. Elle est organisée à partir des importantes collections du Musée national Jean-Jacques Henner, complétées du legs Jules Henner au Petit Palais et d'uvres provenant du musée d'Orsay, des musées de Mulhouse Colmar et Amiens, ainsi que de l'Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts et de la maison de Victor Hugo à Paris.
