J.-C. pour les frontons du dernier temple d'Apollon par les Athéniens Praxias et Androsthénès ont connu une singulière destinée. Réduits en morceaux par une chute brutale sur les parvis du temple lors de la ruine de celui-ci à la fin de l'Antiquité, en majeure partie détruits ou dispersés par les bâtisseurs de Kastri à partir du Moyen-Age, ils furent partiellement retrouvés en 1892, mais les fouilleurs ne surent pas les reconnaître. Longtemps réputés perdus, ils ne devaient être finalement identifiés qu'à partir de 1971 dans les réserves du Musée et dans les dépôts de pierres anonymes où la Grande Fouille les avait laissés. L'ouvrage entreprend donc d'abord de faire l'historiographie de cette longue méprise, et de retracer les étapes de la redécouverte, puis de la patiente recherche qui permet aujourd'hui d'en dresser le catalogue, d'en proposer une reconstitution au moins partielle, et d'analyser le style et l'iconographie de ces sculptures bien datées, grâce aux comptes des Trésoriers, dans le troisième quart du IVe siècle. Aux testimonia déjà connus, à savoir le texte de Pausanias et quelques monnaies impériales représentant la façade du temple, dont elle renouvelle le commentaire, l'étude des fragments et du programme iconographique qu'ils autorisent à restituer a conduit à joindre ici un document contemporain, le " Péan à Dionysos " de Philodamos de Skarpheia, dont la composition apparaît comme directement liée à la conception des frontons du temple. L'analyse comparée du Péan et du programme iconographique des frontons conduit en effet à y reconnaître deux manifestations d'une nouvelle idéologie religieuse, d'inspiration athénienne, sans doute élaborée dans l'entourage de Lycurgue. Fondée sur une assimilation quasi complète de Dionysos à Apollon, dont il devient le frère jumeau, et qui partage avec lui son temple et ses prérogatives, elle vise à assurer au grand dieu attique du théâtre une place majeure dans la religion delphique, et constitue ainsi un défi - l'un des derniers - lancé par la démocratie athénienne en réponse aux efforts déployés par Philippe de Macédoine pour prendre le contrôle du sanctuaire de Delphes.
