Hardcover. Condition: As New. Special Limited Edition. Special Limited Edition of only 180 copies printed thus, this being #84. Composed in Monotype Baskerville, and printed letterpress on T.H. Saunders mould-made paper. Handsomely bound in a nearly square, oatmeal cloth-covered format, with beautiful burgundy leather label to spine, gilt lettered. Hand-made paper construction, and a tipped-in black-and-white portrait of James Simmons, Master Paper Maker of Haslemere 1831 - 1868, at frontis. Selections edited and annotated by the two editors, multiple appendices of the Simmons pedigree, the chronology of paper mills, and then the construction of the diaries. Foreword by W.J.D. Cooper, and with scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. This work comprises a fascinating account of the business affairs of a struggling country papermaker in England during the years 1831-1868. In particular, they do much to illustrate the transition to steam power for converting rags into pulp, during a period of time when traditional paper-makers were being rapidly replaced by paper-making machines. Sterling condition hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. ix + 190 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. From 1831 until shortly before his death at the age of 84 in 1868, James Simmons, master paper maker in the small market town of Haslemere in Surrey, kept a diary. Thirty eight booklets in which the entries were written have recently been made available and provide a unique and fascinating account of the family and business affairs of a struggling country paper maker in the mid nineteenth century. This limited edition is one of 180 copies bound in Loom State oatmeal coloured fabric. The complete print run was of 30 copies quarter bound in leather plus 180 copies of the open edition which were numbered 31 - 210 This copy is hand numbered 54. There are 18 tipped in illustrations and bound in at the back are two examples of paper made in 1989 on a Simmons mould bearing the post horn watermark and the countermark J Simmons 1812. This copy is in pristine condition and has been signed by Alan Crocker and Mrtin Kane on the title page. Laid in is the original prospectus for this important book.
