In addition to the diaries, the Utah editions contain the aforementioned map, Dr. Crampton's useful notes and Introduction, a full roster of the Mariposa Battalion, and a bibliography. Eccleston is the only member of the Battalion known to have kept a contemporary record of the War. While pursuing the Indians, the Mariposa Battalion explored the Yosemite valley, the Fresno Big Trees, and the High Sierra between the main forks of the Merced and San Joaquin Rivers. Warmly inscribed by the editor, Gregory Crampton, on the half-title. Illustrated with black and white views and maps. This work prints the field notes made by Stanton during the survey. Stanton was a very faithful and detailed writer of his daily notes. The notes are from the ill-fated first survey attempt, where Railroad President Brown and two crew members drowned, and the second successful attempt with Stanton in charge. Ford 63.

His was an engineering survey for a projected railroad which would run from Grand Junction, Colorado to San Diego, which had it been followed would have had smoke-tracks in the Grand Canyon but his surveys were ill-fated with several deaths and it ended up not as a scientific survey but a daring deed followed by a succession over the years of dauntless river runners. A handsome near fine copy bound in full brown leather, lettering stamped in gray, Very nice.
