Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Title page + 262 + to rear, chart of Otaheite by Liet. J. Cook 1769 ( Captain James Cook ) + view of Otaheite + 5 plates of animals. Condition Original full leather hardback binding, fair, rear cover a bit loose, front cover detached. Contents mostly very good, clean & tight. Cleanish end pages front/rear, Undated but 1789, Owners name to page 1, Possibly Lacks frontispiece map front (not sure if map was in Vol 1 or vol II), page1/2 edge tear with minor loss, page 101/102 edge tear with small loss, 2 printers numbering mistakes, in both cases text correct, no page number 137/8 (text correct, no text loss) & 2 pages numbered 137/8, but all text correct, just miss-numbering. Andrew Sparrman (1748-1820) (Anders Sparrman) was a pupil of Linnaeus. He travelled to the Cape of Good Hope, spending some time there before joining Captain James Cook on his second voyage on the Resolution at Table Bay, where he was an assistant botanist to the Forster s. (Reinhold and Georg). It is historically important as Sparrman tells of some events not reported by either Cook or Forster in their books. This was translated from the Swedish originals, undated, but looks to be the Australian 1st edition and an early Australian printed and published book by the Morison s, undated but from WorldCat is 1789 . To sum up Vol II only lacks frontice map, but as 99% of pages very good, clean and tight. A good price for this rare item. Size: 11 x 17.5cm Approx.
