Condition: Good. 1948. First Edition. 266 pages. Pictorial dust jacket over brown cloth with gilt lettering. Black and white photographic plates. Book has a slight smoky odour. Minor foxing and tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers, lighter to plates. Light creasing to gutters and hinges but binding remains firm. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has similar tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean. Clipped dust jacket with moderate rubbing, chipping and tearing to edges. Moderate tanning and scuffing overall with visible loss and creasing to panels.

Quarter bound in green cloth over illustrated paper-covered boards, gilt titles on spine; illustrated endpapers. 4to. Some small spots of discoloration on cloth. Gutter a little loose in middle; but otherwise internally very neat, clean and bright. Dust jacket has some chipping at the corners and spine ends with a small closed tear in bottom right corner of front cover, shelf wear along edges and some small stains on the back cover. On increasing the numbers and diversity of trees after World War II and what tree species are appropriate for what environments.

From the foreword: "If we do not make a City of London worthy of the spirit of those who fought the Battle of BRitain and the battle of London, posterity wil rise and curse us for unimaginative fools". Sadly, Casson's ideas were not implemented.
