[52] pp.; 21 x 24 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white; edition size unkown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed Two volume exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with two-part show held March 14 ? May 18, 2014 and May 25 ? August 3. "Other Primary Structures revisited the premise of and built upon the Museum's seminal 1966 exhibition Primary Structures: Younger American and British Sculptors, the first American museum exhibition to survey the style now known as Minimalism. Primary Structures introduced the public to such artists as Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Walter De Maria, Robert Morris, and others?figures unknown at the time but soon to become synonymous with a radically new approach to sculpture. Nearly 50 years later, Other Primary Structures revisits this formative moment in art history while also reexamining the period from today's far more global perspective. "Presented in two parts, the first part of the exhibition titled Others 1, examined work created between 1960 and 1967, while Others 2, on view from May 25 ? August 3, presented work created between 1967 and 1970, some of which was directly influenced by the 1966 Primary Structures exhibition at the Jewish Museum." -- publisher's statement. "Alvin Lustig was modern before it was cool. But there has never been a monograph devoted to his work until now. A genius best known for his book covers and interior design, his theories on design education were precursors to the curricula of some of the most renowned design schools today. Lustig lent his imaginative vision and talent to a wide range of legendary projects, from the groundbreaking architecture of 1940s Los Angeles to magazine covers that have become collector's items. Spanning the breadth of Lustig's tragically brief but prolific career, Born Modern is a must-have for any student or practitioner of design, as well as anyone interested in the history of American visual culture.".

This archive includes over 125 items designed by Elaine Lustig Cohen from the 1950s-2001 as well as a small collection of announcement cards for her own exhibitions. In the 1950s, she worked with her first husband Alvin Lustig on many of his design projects including the signage for the Seagram Building. From the mid 1950s, she designed many book covers for Meridian, which was published by Arthur Cohen, her second husband, until he sold the company in 1960. This archive contains over 50 dustjacket proofs and other promotional materials for Meridian and other publishers, and over 40 art catalogs and announcements from the many art galleries and museums she worked for; most notably the Kootz Gallery in the later 1950s and the Jewish Museum from 1963-1968. Throughout her career, she also designed business cards, letterhead and other advertisements for many famous firms and individuals from the architects Philip Johnson, Richard Meier and Eero Saarinen to shopping bags for Sona Handicrafts of India and the Ex Libris bookstore--about 35 of her business designs are present. The majority of this archive was purchased from the Estate of Elaine Lustig Cohen, and was verified as designed by Elaine by her daughter Tamar, to which I have added a few more art catalogs and posters. Please inquire for complete list of items. Shipping at cost.
