Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in the U.S.A. Date on the title page. First Printing. Introduction, Appendix; xiii, 269 pages. The original gray cloth is in excellent shape, with only a pale hint of age-spotting---barely perceptible; corners are square, with gentle bumping to the spine. Red lettering is bright on the upper board and, with decorative red lines, on the spine. The interior is uniformly creamy-bright, despite a few freckles on the top edge; it is fresh and completely clean. The original pictorial dust jacket is unclipped ($6.50) with mild touches of wear at the edges. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] "This is the first English translation of 'Un Poete regarde la Croix'. [I]t was natural that Claudel, who was often called the 'poet of the cross,' should one day write a book on the symbol and reality that lay behind all his writings. . . . The poet standing, so to speak, at the foot of the cross contemplates the mystery of the Passion and Death of Christ and the meaning of his final words."---from the flap. Subjects: Jesus Christ, Seven Last Words, The Supreme Cry, Descent from the Cross, The Harrowing of Hell, Meditations, Prayers---For Jews, Moslems, Pagans, Protestants, Unbelievers, My Family, Myself; Appendix---The Kiss of Judas, Benjamin's Three Hundred Silver Pieces, Jacob's Peregrination. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
