En face à face : deux hommes, deux peintres qui ont marqué leur époque, deux styles très différents. Aujourd'hui, les deux établissements qui portent leurs noms, le musée national Eugène-Delacroix à Paris et le musée Ingres Bourdelle à Montauban, réinterrogent cette confrontation avec un angle original : la présentation de leurs objets familiers et quotidiens, utiles à leur création ou témoignages de leurs goûts personnels. Partant de leur rivalité réelle ou supposée, Ingres et Delacroix. Objets d'artistes explore dans le détail l'univers des deux peintres. Les objets intimes leur ayant appartenu (objets décoratifs ou souvenirs de voyage) joints aux objets de la création (palettes, dont celle qu'aurait utilisée Ingres pour Le Bain turc, pinceaux, boîtes et meubles à peinture.) sont mis en regard avec des vues d'ateliers ou encore des tableaux représentatifs de leur art. Sont également présentés différents portraits des deux hommes, images d'apparat mises en scène pour les glorifier ou caricatures illustrant leur affrontement, ainsi que leurs médailles et décorations et divers documents révélant leurs goûts artistiques et leurs aspirations. Tous ces objets nous parlent d'une autre manière des deux artistes, montrant leurs différences mais induisant aussi des rapprochements inattendus. Son violon est passé à la postérité mais on sait moins qu'Ingres aimait à s'entourer de moulages d'antiques ou de vases grecs et vouait un véritable culte à Raphaël. Delacroix avait conservé des objets (armes, céramiques de Fès, instruments de musique.) rapportés de son voyage au Maroc et aimait par ailleurs les bibelots animaliers, ornés de poissons ou de serpents. Si ces objets nous amènent à nous interroger sur les liens entre la vie des artistes et leur oeuvre, ils nous permettent également d'entrer dans l'intimité et dans le processus créatif de deux des plus grands peintres du XIXe siècle français. Prix de Rome en 1858, il rapporte de son séjour à la villa Médicis de copies d'uvres des maîtres et de lumineux petits paysages dans la ligné de Corot. Fidèle à ses racines, il peint, après la défaite de 1870, L'Alsace. Elle attend, toile emblématique de la perte de sa province natale. A côté des nymphes rousses et des scènes idylliques qui consacrent célébrité, il brosse de puissants tableaux religieux. Sa facture renouvelle l'art du modelé, entre ombres et lumières.
