Single page from "The Universal Traveller: Or, A Compleat Description Of the several Nations of the World" by Mr. Salmon, printed for Richard Baldwin, London, 1759. Shows people using horses to thresh corn, as well as a local wedding, with wife (?) standing inside circle of people. Originally in Peter Kolben's "The Present State of the Cape of Good Hope" (1741).

The Kingdom of Whydah, sometimes written Hueda, was a kingdom on the coast of West Africa in the boundaries of the modern nation of Benin. Man is being roasted alive, while the woman waits her turn.

Single page from "The Universal Traveller: Or, A Compleat Description Of the several Nations of the World" by Mr. Salmon, printed for Richard Baldwin, London, 1759. The Kingdom of Whydah, sometimes written Hueda, was a kingdom on the coast of West Africa in the boundaries of the modern nation of Benin. King Haffon is shown seated before large groups of drummers and armed warriors with a large contingent of white slavers and traders seated at his left. To his right are some of his favourite wives. Haffon was the last ruler of the kingdom before it was capture by the forces of Dahomey in 1727. The 1725 date was given by Chevalier des Marchais but some modern scholars believe this even was in 1717-8.

Single page from "The Universal Traveller: Or, A Compleat Description Of the several Nations of the World" by Mr. Salmon, printed for Richard Baldwin, London, 1759. Key shows locations of various buildings, gardens, etc. Loango existed from approx. the 16th to 19th centuries in what is now western Congo, Southern Gabon and Cabinda, Angola. It exported copper to the European market and was a major producer and exporter of cloth. The Dutch recorded the first traditional account of the kingdom's origins as reported by the geographer Olfert Dapper.

Figure 1 shows the Island of Teneriffe, handcoloured in pink. Figure 2 is an uncoloured view of the town of Santa-Cruz and the coastal road. Tenerife, formerly spelled Teneriffe, is the largest and most populous island of the Canary Islands. Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital, now has a population of over 200,000. Map shows St. Johns Fort, Watering Place, former volcano, etc.
