"In 1562, Castellion published Conseil à la France désolée (Advice to a desolate France) in which he exposed « le forcement des consciences » (the mastering of conscience) and pleaded for letting « les deux religions -catholique et protestante- libres, et que chacun tienne sans contrainte celle des deux qu'il voudra » (both religions (Catholic and Protestant) free for each individual to choose, one or the other as he pleased). Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu.

(Addl. Title Page Content - in Latin): "Sibyllinorum oraculorum libri VIII. Addita Sebastiani Castalionis interpretatione Latina, quae Graeco erigionè respondeat. Quae praeterea huic editioni ultra priorem accesserint, diligens lector ex praefationibus & collatione facilè deprehendet." It is not indicated exactly when this copy was published, but believe it was in late 1700s. The 'Sibylline Oracles' is a collection of Christian and Jewish poems about the apocalypse. This edition contains both the original Greek text and the Latin translation, published together. The translation was written by Sebasianus Castellio (or Sebastien Chatillon) in 1555. "They are a gold mine for students of Classical mythology and early first millenium Jewish, Gnostic and Christian beliefs. Notable are apocalyptic passages scattered throughout which at times seem like a first draft of the Biblical Book of Revelation.".
