Paper. Condition: VG. Paul Hogarth (illustrator). SUBTITLED : ` Regina v. Penguin Books Limited '. In England, about 1960, one wasn't to write such words as balls, shit, arse, cock or piss in a WORK of literary or artistic merit. The government of the day decided to put the publishers, Penguin Books, on trial under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959. These 250 pages are an edited transcript of that trial - INCLUDING arguments for the defence, for the prosecution, witnesses statements and the jury's decision. Decorative b/w drawings of the courtroom by Hogarth. Cond : Green and white paper wrapper with a front cover graphic of a blind-folded penguin holding the scales of justice. Spine sli. yellowed but corners and edges are sharp. Colours bright, binding tight. No tears, creases, folds, names nor marks. Giftable ! Quote (p. 12) : " Let me stress, if I may, in connexion with the meaning of obscenity, that the Act deems the book to be obscene if it tends to deprave and corrupt those who are likely in all the ciurcumstances to read it. It is not a question whether it has . .".

Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Middlesex. Penguin Books Ltd (Penguin Special). 1961. First printing by this publisher. Green wraps in much better condition than would be expected for age. Sharp corners and no wear at spine ends although panel is browned. Delightful drawings and cartoons by Paul Hogarth in the text, to the title page and front wrap. Solid firm binding and clean and unmarked text block with a little age-related toning. Details the public prosecution in the UK of Penguin under the Obscene Publications Act 1959 for the publication of D. H. Lawrence's 1928 novel Lady Chatterley's Lover. The trial took place over six days. The trial was a test case of the defence of public good provision under section 4 of the Act which was defined as a work "in the interests of science, literature, art or learning, or of other objects of general concern". The jury found for the defendant in a result that ushered in the liberalisation of publishing, and which some saw as the beginning of the permissive society in Britain.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Hogarth, Paul (illustrator). 1st Edition. British limited edition (number 822 of 2000 copies). With original unclipped (and unpriced) jacket. Signed by Allen Lane to limitation page. With illustrations by Paul Hogarth. The signed limited edition, privately published for Allen Lane. This special edition, produced for private circulation only, contains a report of the House of Lords debate on a motion to ban certain works of Lawrence which was not included in the regular Penguin trade edition. Plain yellow jacket has faults - namely minor patchy edge/shelf wear, a few small marks, patchy browning (including to spine), a few very small (approx. 5mms) tears, little pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine and to corners, the odd small crease and is in only good condition. Boards are near fine with a hint of pushing to corners and minor pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. Top of pages slightly dusty with the odd small mark/spot of foxing. Odd small mark/spot of foxing to page edges. Pages little tanned. Very occasional small mark to pages. No other faults. A nice copy. All books described honestly and accurately. Paypal accepted. Signed by Author(s).
Published by 21 November ; 6 Liskeard Gardens London SE3 on New Statesman letterhead, 1957
8vo, 2 pp, 33 lines. Good, on lightly aged and creased paper. An interesting letter, written by a former policeman to a former probation officer, on the subject of the latter's book 'Come to Prison: A Tour through British Prisons today' (Longmans, 1957), about which the former has written a negative review. Begins by praising Stokes' 'really generous letter, written at what cost in self-control I can only dimly imagine'. When Hewitt 'read the published review', he thought 'that it was still on the whole unfair'. 'I hate reviewing really, and am a bad reviewer. Objectivity eludes me, and I pontificate, as if I were the only man in the world with the knowledge of the subject.' He claims what he 'really thought' was that 'the name of Sewell Stokes commands respect'. He remembers 'how very impressed G. W. Stonier was years ago with Court Circular, though I thought that book was unfair!' He is writing 'an Observer "profile" ' of Sir Lionel Fox, whom they both admire. Concludes 'I'm afraid your very readable book will be a success, despite the price!'.
