HARD BACK BROWN. Condition: GOOD. The American Chesterfield, or Way to Wealth, Honour, and Distinction; Being Selected From the Letters of Lord Chesterfield to His Son; and Extracts From Other Eminent Authors, on the Subject of Politeness: With Alterations and Additions, Suited to the Youth of the United States. This book has an embedded stamp of the publisher, and decoration around the border of the front and rear cover. The title, which is printed on the spine, is in gold gilt lettering. There is a small amount of bending, and slight tearing on the corners and spine, not to mention some staining on the rear cover, and fading of the spine. Finally, the book does have some foxing to the interior pages, and discoloration of the fore edges. DATE PUBLISHED: 1852 EDITION: 286.

Covers are scuffed, creased in places, but still a fairly handsome example, light foxing, very light dampstaining to the fore edges of about fifty pages , not affecting text, else G. Previously owned by J. D. Helm (1866), of Helmsley. There were several Helm family members who were prominent in Kentucky history, and Helm Place, or Helmsley, was the family estate of one branch. One of the Helms married the sister of Abraham Lincoln's wife. But I don't know who the previous owner of this book was, or which family he belonged to.
