Condition: G. Frontis of bust of Horace (illustrator). Navy blue binding, gilt lettering on spine. Fading toward outer front edge, cut somewhat unevenly at top fore-edge. Slight tanning to endpapers. It has been stated in the Life of Horace that after his schoolboy days were over he went to Athens to pursue higher studies in philosophy, and to cultivate a more thorough knowledge of Green literature. He seems to have read much of the lyric poetry of Alceus and Sappho and which had a special charm for him. This, as it turned out, gained him his lasting fame.
