The book has been damp at some time and has a little discolouration to the left side and top edge of the rear panel and along the top edge of the front panel. There is a little fading to the spine with the lettering a little worn. The page edges are a little discoloured with some brown spotting to the fore edges and the bottom edges. There is a gift message at the top of the front free endpaper and the front endpapers have some scattered brown spotting. There is damp staining along the right side of the rear pastedown and the fore edges of the pages through from page 169 to the end of the book and also at the front of the book. There is a small brown stain affecting pages 47 to 51, there is spotting in a few places through the book and the book has a light musty smell but the pages are otherwise generally unmarked. The jacket has staining around the right edge of the front panel at the bottom and along three quarters of the length of the rear panel and the rear flap. Quite heavy chipping at the top of the spine where there are one inch tears on either side and a little chipping at the bottom. One inch closed tear to the top right corner of the front panel, a half inch closed tear to the top edge of the rear panel and a half inch closed tear to the left edge of the rear panel. The jacket has been price-clipped by the publisher with a new price printed on it. Light chipping to the corners. Jacket, colour frontispiece and black and white line illustrations by Newton Whittaker. First printing.
