CONDITION: Inner hinges are cracked in both the front and back, yet boards are firmly attached. Dampstain on fore-edge, but does not compromise text. Leaves have evenly toned. Some dark discoloration spots and marginalia occasionally throughout. Crack within the gutter between pages 448 and 449, yet binding is sound and pagination complete. Excerpt from the introductory pages: "The Trustees of the Public Library have the pleasure, by means of the present Index, to open for the use of their fellow-citizens another portion of the books which have been entrusted to their care. It embraces about fifty-five thousand volumes, all in the Upper Hall of the building, as the previous Index, published in 1858, with its supplements coming down to near the end of 1860, embraces about nineteen thousand volumes in the Lower Hall."
