Corrigenda printed inside back cover Report of a working party appointed by the Department of Internatonal Affairs of the British Council of Churches and the Conference of British Missionary Societies. Chairman: Philip Mason, rapporteur: Tom Baird, secre- tary: R. Elliott Kendall; members: Arthur W. Blaxall, Kenneth R. Johnstone, Walter Makhulu, Picton Mbatha, Paul Oestreicher, Ronald K.Orchard, Clifford J. Parsons, H. R. Sydenham, Matthew Wakatama, Hugh E. Wilcox. -- The report `seeks to illuminate the thinking of British Christians about revolutionary violence. It is unanimous. There were inevitably many differences of emphasis; almost every member at some point agreed to make concessions.' (x) -- `Having stressed the dangers of a superficial judgment, the Working Party must present its own credentials. For some of us, these territories are home; this is where we were born and brought up;here are the places and the people we love. For us it is a heavy and continual burden that our own societies are dark with hostility and suppression of freedom. Other members of the Working Party, though they belong to the United Kingdom, have lived for many years in one or other of these territories and have witnessed with sadness the steady growth of tyranny. The small minority who cannot claim long residence have for many years given time to specialized study and travel.' (6f.) -- Among the conclusions: `It is too late to insist that our support should be confined to those pledged to non-violence. The time has come to show our solidarity with those seeking radical change and struggling for freedom in Southern Africa.' (77).

Or can civil and international tensions be resolved by non-violent methods which are both morally right and effective in practical terms? This report, produced by a working party originally set up by the Presbyterian Church of England, pursues the practical possibilities of non-violence. After some theological reflections on the nature of peace and conflict, the report concentrates on case studies which highlight occasions on which non-violence has been effective in the past and suggests extensions of its applications in the future.
