Weitere berühmte Gestüte sind das Nationalgestüt Kladruby nad Labem (1579) in Tschechien, Lipizza (1580) in Slowenien, das Nationalgestüt Le Pin (1715) in Frankreich, das ehemalige preußische Hauptgestüt Trakehnen (1731) sowie das Gestüt Bábolna (1789) in Ungarn.Bevor es amtliche Dokumente wie Hengst-, Stut-, Zucht oder Abstammungsbücher gab, wurde durch das Brandzeichen die Rassezugehörigkeit oder der Eigentümer des Pferdes durch Symbole oder Buchstaben dokumentiert. Es galt als Nachweis für die Herkunft und auch des Eigentümers. Schon die Sumerer wanden diese Technik an, um gestohlene Pferde identifizieren können. Im Mittelalters wurden bei Fälschungen oder bei 'Überbrennen' mit einem falschen Brandzeichen nicht selten die Todesstrafe verhängt. Nicht immer war es möglich, das Pferd aufgrund seiner individuellen Färbung und Zeichnung, wie z.B. dem Tinker, zu identifizieren.
