Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. First Edition. 282 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour photographs. Map endpapers. "In the Beach Cemetery, Anzac, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey lie the remains of Private John 'Simpson' and his donkey, Duffy. For three weeks, until they both were killed on 19 May, 1915, Simpson (whose real name was Kirkpatrick) and Duffy moved wounded men from the front lines to the army hospital a mile away. Two young brothers, Major P.K. Kennedy and Major D.P. Kennedy of Guelph, Ontario, fought side by side in France during World War II. They died in battle within two days of each other in September 1944. Their remains lie in the Calais Canadian War Cemetery, one of 2,500 cemeteries built and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. John Simpson and the Kennedys are among the 1,750,000 Commonwealth citizens who lost their lives during the two World Wars of the 20th century. These men and women now lie in the immaculate cemeteries of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, located in 140 countries as far flung as Belgium, Papua New Guinea, and India. (This) is the definitive guide to these cemeteries and to the almost 200 war memorials constructed by the Commission." Previous owner's signature, place and date in ink on free front endpaper; minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, light to moderate edge and hinge wrinkling/creasing, light rubbing, several wrinkles in laminate, two tiny edge tears archivally taped.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Over the course of his 75 year career Field Marshal Bramall - or Dwin as he is universally known - has been in the forefront of military thinking. Clearly destined to reach the pinnacle of his profession he shone in a succession of prestigious appointments both in command and on the staff. He fought in Normandy, saw active service in Ireland and Borneo and masterminded the Falklands Campaign. As this unique collection of personal Papers , dating from the 1950s to the present day, testify, Bramall has never shied away from controversy or original thought, whether on low level leadership or higher military strategy. His views are far from predictable or trenchant as demonstrated by his changing nuclear stance and his clearly argued opposition in the House of Lords to intervention in Iraq. The publication of this unique collection of letters, lectures, speeches and theses on a wide range of topics gives the reader the opportunity to delve into a rich mine of sound military thinking and common sense. AUTHOR: Field Marshal The Lord Bramall of Bushfield KG GCB OBE MC was educated at Eton College before being commissioned into the King's Road Rifle Corps in 1943, taking part in the Normandy landings. He was awarded the Military Cross in March 1945. His career progressed rapidly, instructing at the School of Infantry and the Staff College, Camberley before serving on Lord Mountbatten's staff, earning his OBE. After commanding his Battalion, during the Borneo Confrontation, and 5th (Airportable) Brigade, he became successively GOC 1st Armoured Division, CBF Hong Kong and C-in-C UK Land Forces. In 1979 he was appointed Chief of the General Staff playing a key role in the Falklands War before being promoted to Field Marshal as Chief of Defence Staff in 1982. His many appointments have included President of the MCC, Lord Lieutenant of Greater London and Knight of the Garter. He married Avril (Vernon) in 1949 and they had a son and daughter. The publication of this unique collection of letters, lectures, speeches and theses on a wide range of topics gives the reader the opportunity to delve into a rich mine of sound military thinking and common sense. First Edition
First edition in publisher's original colour illustrated stiff card wrap covers [soft back]. 8vo. 9½'' x 7¼''. The Worshipful Company of Skinners is one of the 'Great Twelve' Livery Companies of the City of London. It was originally an association of those engaged in the trade of skins and furs and was granted Royal Charter in 1327 from Edward III. The Company was authorised to regulate and control the fur trade throughout the country. In this copiously illustrated book, the author shows how some of the most powerful merchants of the day were able to set up great trading empires, which allowed them and the Skinners' Company to acquire the wealth that enabled them to found schools, almshouses, and other charities for the benefit of the young, the needy and the elderly. This caring tradition has endured for over five hundred years and, as the author points out, by learning to adapt and to seek out new challenges, the Company is still a powerful force for good in the 21st Century. Contains [viii], 87 printed pages of text with archive monochrome illustrations and colour photographs throughout. In Fine condition, no dust wrapper as issued. Member of the P.B.F.A.
