Rodeado de cierto ocultismo, a veces en sus ritos, más por miedo a la persecución que por lo prohibido, los seguidores del credo yazidí han sido condenados al ostracismo a lo largo de los siglos. Los constantes éxodos en los dos últimos siglos, y una larga historia de acoso y conversiones forzosas han reducido a la comunidad yazidí en Irak a no más de medio millón de personas. El pueblo yazidí dice haber sobrevivido a 74 genocidios , de los cuales 60 de ellos fueron perpetrados por musulmanes, que causaron la muerte de 23 millones de personas de esta comunidad. La primera campaña de islamización de los kurdos ?de religión yazidí? sucedió bajo el mandato del califa Omar Ibn al-Jattab (634-644). Se derramó tanta sangre yazidí que, hasta la fecha, se utiliza el término Sorka Alem (mundo rojo) para describir esta etapa. El último genocidio lo llevó a cabo el autodenominado Estado Islámico en pleno siglo XXI. Pero las rivalidades políticas entre el gobierno regional kurdo y el nacional iraquí impiden que se establezcan iniciativas legales para el reconocimiento internacional de los crímenes cometidos por el Daesh contra la comunidad yazidí como acto de genocidio.
