Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Favourite poems from some of the most popular poets in the English language mingle with those that may be lesser known but are no less compelling. Women Romantic poets take their rightful place in the line-up.'All good poetry is the spontaneous poetry of powerful feelings' -William WordsworthNo generation of poets has felt more powerfully and enduringly than the Romantics of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In this indispensable volume, Sir Jonathan Bate - prizewinning biographer of Wordsworth, Keats and John Clare - brings together the most loved poems of the age, together with many forgotten gems. Alongside classics such as Coleridge's 'Kubla Khan' and 'Frost at Midnight', the odes of Keats and generous selections from Wordsworth's Lyrical Ballads and The Prelude, the reader will discover the wit of Byron, the wildness of Blake, the passion of Shelley, a wealth of nature poems by Clare, and the distinctive voices of women Romantics such as Charlotte Smith, Mary Robinson, Felicia Hemans, Dorothy Wordsworth and Letitia Landon. Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Titus Andronicus is one of Shakespeare's earliest and bloodiest tragedies and was hugely successful in his lifetime. Subsequent generations have struggled with its bold confrontation of violence but in the 20th and 21st centuries the play has chimed with audiences again, perhaps because of its simultaneously shocking and playful approach to violent revenge and bodily mutilation. Jonathan Bate's original Arden edition was first published in 1995 and has had a significant influence on how the play has been performed and studied in the past 20 years. This revised edition includes a new 10,000 word introductory essay in which Bate reassess his views on the play's co-authorship with George Peele in the light of contemporary textual scholarship and updates his lively account of the play's performance history, on the international stage and screen. With detailed on-page commentary notes this will continue to be the edition of choice for students, scholars and theatre-makers. Bloomsbury Arden Shakespeare is an imprint of Bloomsbury. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

At a time when governments are being forced to make swingeing savings in public expenditure, why should they continue to invest public money funding research into ancient Greek tragedy, literary value, philosophical conundrums or the aesthetics of design? Does such research deliver 'value for money' and 'public benefit'? Such questions have become especially pertinent in the UK in recent years, in the context of the drive by government to instrumentalize research across the disciplines and the prominence of discussions about economic impact' and 'knowledge transfer'.In this book a group of distinguished humanities researchers, all working in Britain, but publishing research of international importance, reflect on the public value of their discipline, using particular research projects as case-studies. Quarto, disbound. Sermon delivered in the aftermath of the Littleport riots of 1816 on the Isle of Ely. The riots arose from inflation following the Napoleonic Wars that drove the price of bread and other necessities beyond the reach of the labouring poor. During the subsequent trial, the position of Chief Justice of the Isle of Ely was Edward Christian, brother of the Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian. Edward Christian's competence as a magistrate was repeatedly challenged in the course of his career yet his wide knowledge of legal history earned him a Cambridge professorship. The sermon here printed was delivered to a congregation of prominent Ely residents by the parson Sir Henry Bate Dudley, who earlier instigated the suppression of the rioters. The trial resulted in the execution of five rioters, a spectacle that elicited great sympathy from the gathered crowd in a charged political atmosphere. A further nine men were sentenced to transportation, of which seven were finally sent to New South Wales. . A few scattered stains affect the title page, a good copy overall.
