First Edition
Hardcover first edition - First printing. "Tahirih's poetry, astonishing and beautiful, stands as a monument to this remarkable 19th-century Iranian woman." The translator and editor of this book, Amin Banani, provides an introduction that discusses Tahirih in the context of the literary history of Persia. Tahirih and Qurrat al-Ayn are both titles of Fatimah Zarin Taj (1814 or 1817 1852), an influential poet, women's rights activist and theologian of the Babi faith in Iran. Best remembered for unveiling herself at a conference of men, she was soon arrested, placed under house arrest, and executed in 1852. Before her death she declared: "You can kill me as soon as you like, but you cannot stop the emancipation of women." Bilingual edition with the original Persian and English translations. English poems by Jascha Kessler and Anthony A Lee. Frontispiece. Extensive notes. 147 pp. Studies in the Babi and Baha'i Religions, Volume 17. Fine in fine dust jacket (a new copy.)
