Loin d'être un jeune homme isolé qui écrit avec peine, il est un fougueux adolescent qui veut vivre des aventures et écrit avec une facilité déconcertante. Presque trop. A l'âge du baccalauréat, Gustave Flaubert vit ce que l'on pourrait appeler une sérieuse crise d'adolescence. Sous l'influence de son meilleur ami de cinq ans son aîné, le gentil collégien s'est mué en un lycéen qui boit, fume et à évoque à tout bout de champ ses virées au bordel. Son père, le médecin le plus en vue de Rouen, pourrait lui pardonner ces incartades si Gustave ne trouvait pas le moyen de se faire renvoyer du lycée pour indiscipline six mois à peine avant le bachot. Il lui promet de réussir l'examen en candidat libre. Pari tenu ! Son père le récompense par un voyage en Corse. Sur le chemin du retour, il se laisse séduire par une femme qui a quinze de plus que lui. Son initiation lui laisse un goût amer, elle vient rabaisser la belle image qu'il se faisait de l'amour, en particulier de celui qu'il ressent pour la belle Elsa Schlesinger. C'est que, durant toute sa jeunesse et malgré ses fanfaronnades, Flaubert est un romantique qui vit passionnément. La vie n'est jamais à la hauteur de ses aspirations. Il se réfugie dans l'écriture qui est alors un exutoire pour ses angoisses existentielles. Obligé par son père de suivre des études de Droit, il en est libéré par une mystérieuse maladie nerveuse. A la mort de son père, alors qu'il est âgé de 24 ans, plus rien ne s'oppose à ce qu'il se consacre à sa vocation littéraire et réconcilie en elle son goût pour l'extravagance et son profond désespoir. La rencontre avec Marie Arnoux (l'héroïne de L'Education sentimentale), la description des plaisirs amoureux de Madame Bovary de même que son suicide, l'attrait pour l'Orient de Salammbô, ou encore la fascination pour la tentation de Saint Antoine, en un mot l'ensemble de l'oeuvre littéraire de Flaubert, tout cela était déjà en germe dès sa jeunesse. Il fallut seulement du temps, une quinzaine d'années de travail quotidien, pour qu'il parvienne à domestiquer son écriture et donner naissance à ses chefs d'oeuvre. Il fit ainsi mentir tardivement sa réputation, notamment dans sa famille, d'habitué à l'échec par paresse et à laquelle lui-même avait fini par croire par pessimisme. Il fit preuve pour cela d'une volonté qui confine à l'obstination.
