Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very good condition with impressionist Ex-Libris plate on flyleaf. Originating from the traditional folk arts such as paper cutting and embroidery, peasant painting began in Huxian County in the 1950s. At first, paintings only expressed work, but now paintings can be found of every aspect of daily life. By using bright colors and a unique technique, painters display their everyday activities from feeding livestock and children playing to local operas and village traditions. Each painting is different in its own way, with some being bold and unconstrained, while others are strong and impassioned. The work gives an insight to what it is like to live the folk life. The painting movement in Huhsien County, Shenshi Province, started from small beginnings. It started in fact on the construction site of a new reservoir in 1958, year of the great Leap Forward, when a few people had the idea of painting the work in progress as a record and stimulus, Conditions were difficult at first and where no paints were available they made their own colours from soot, red soil, and wine. But their initiative was taken up by the County Party Committee who organised art lasses in which the present painters could learn techniques from professionals. The album presents a selection from paintings exhibited in Peking in 1973 with the addition of several more recent works.
